I remember your daughter go admitted by a few top top girls schools in UK two years ago! Which one she chose finally?

Has she also applied for HKU medicine ?

I would prefer QM than Birmingham. Medic in London (be it ICL, UCL, KCL or QM) is definitely better. (But the ranking doesn't really matter to Medic). And your daughter may have more friends (classmates from HK and UK) also studying medic in London too. Better social life is important too because studying Medic is killing people.

If your daughter is considering coming back to HK or Asia to practice, QM is definitely better as she is more renowned and well known among the general public and the professional sector.

But as 'EASTCOAST' has mentioned, it is important to consider the chance of getting internship and training practice in UK. As I don't have much information in this aspect, please try to solicit sufficient information before making your decision. Recently, it is becoming harder for graduates to secure a Tier 2 working visa in UK.

The UK welcomes medical practitioners of all grades and experience. But we strongly recommend that you find work as a doctor before you apply for registration with a licence to practise. The UK job market is very competitive, and some doctors struggle to find a job.

The UK, especially London and the South-East of England, is an expensive place to live. There is strong competition for many jobs, and not just in the medical profession.

其實在英國做醫生，除了社會地位高外，人工都是一般。 NHS的專科醫生年薪最高是 £69,325，最高級的 consultant 都是 £99,437 年薪，私人執業的市場也很少。另外，英國的稅率可以多過45%，還要交 National Insurance。

如果要交海外學生學費 (£32,580 : International students – clinical - years 3, 4 and 5) ，又無居英權或打算返香港執業，真的要想清楚。

Great points Bristol. She prefers studying in UK than Hk and she fully understand the competiveness in UK. I hope she has a nice school life as life after school years is tough as a doctor. Thx.

再分享一些在英國讀醫科的資料。

英國有34所公營醫學院，約6800個學額，政府規定不可收多於7.5%的海外學生，醫科學生在醫學院完成5/6年的課程後，須接受由NHS 安排的2年實習 (Foundation Programme) ，海外學生實習要取得 Tier 4 visa。
由於海外學生學費生比本土學生貴 (£32,580 vs £9000) ，英國大學為了賺錢，很喜歡收海外學生，但基於政府7.5%規定，醫學院收海外學生比其他學科有限制。近年，英國很多醫學院為了賺更多錢，收了很多擁居英權的港生和類似的外居國民，這些學生很多繳付高昂的海外學生學費，但上報時就當本土學生及不計入7.5%限額內，他們一般的 offer 比其他學生吸引，有個朋友 IB 35 分便可入讀北愛爾蘭的醫學院 (HKU 要 43分，CUHK要 42分)。

除了34所公營醫學院，英國也有幾間私立醫學院 (Buckingham University , University of Central Lancashire , Aston University ) ，海外/本土學生學費都是£35,000。

海外學生學費為醫學院提供額外收入，但醫科學生在NHS 的實習卻是蝕本生意，因此，英國政府正檢討海外醫科學生在英國實習的機會。

Although overseas students contribute significantly to the costs of their University education, it was acknowledged that they still generated costs, especially in relation to clinical placements. For example, in medicine nonEEA students pay the full costs of their undergraduate tuition (approximately £22k pa). The NHS, however, still picks up the related SIFT (approximately £40k1 pa per student) and Foundation Programme costs (approximately £30k pa per trainee) on the basis that these students are then part of the UK healthcare professional education and training workforce resource

At the same time, the Review Group recognised there cannot be unlimited access to overseas students given the financial consequences for the NHS – currently each student results in a cost to the NHS education and training budget at a time of increased financial pressure. If the students return to their home countries, this could be regarded as an unnecessary drain on scarce NHS resources. In addition, there is a limit on the capacity of the NHS to provide clinical placements. Consequently, the targets were set to balance these different factors.

If studying Medical in UK, is it recognised in HK? Can the students come back to HK and practise? If no, can the students sit for some exams so that they can practise in HK? Is the exams very difficult?

Medical students graduate from countries other than HK have to pass the very difficult exam in HK before practice.
