Hello all,

想問下 IB學校 (用英語教學) & 國際學校之間有什麼分別?

How does a school get defined as international school? Is it just because it is more overseas students?

想知道我應該要送仔仔去本地IB學校 or International School

國際學校有3個元素︰
1. 不用本地課程；
2. 不考本地公開試，例如中學不考DSE；
3. 收國際學生，但要收多少百分比的國際學生則未有標準。
讀哪類學校只有你知，但兩類學校都不易入，一路申請一路想吧！

每個家庭在選擇international school都有不同看法，香港教育局有其從政策上去界定：國際、DSS及private school的分野。

IB school是一個國際組織的認証、是一個curriculum, 而其IBDP是一個課程也是評估考核；因此在香港的國際、DSS及private school均可加入成為IB school.

在香港，IB school 看來都是以英語為教學語言。

至於國際學校之中也有行不同國家的課程和學制，你選哪一間，看來又會跟國籍及未來升學選擇有關。

There are some official definitions as well as international accreditations but these should not come first in assisting you to make the big decision. There is indeed a full spectrum of schools in HK now, from "purely international" to "purely local". You should start by determining what kind of education you prefer for your son and then the flowchart will unfold gradually after you receive the feedback from parents in this forum. Some families choose "international schools" for better English education, some for the teaching methods and environment, some for the philosophy of education, etc. Of course, what you finally get may not be your first priority because of the intense competition. Go to schools of your preference and take a good look while submit multiple applications to increase your chance of admission before you are in a position to pick the school of your choice.

Thank you for the info. So IB schools still need to sit the hk open exams? But if they are using a different curriculum, would it be harder for the kid to take the exam?

AS above Radiomama mentioned , IB is a curriculum and it has its own grading and exams which means IB schools do not take local exams. However, some local schools have the options to take either DSE or IB stream in high school so some students still need to take the DSE if this stream has chosen/

It will be easier to quote the name of school for comparison. Since an IB school can be an international school or private school mainly with local student mix, some schools offer both IB and DSE....
Are thinking about DSS or private school like Creative, CKY vs those traditional international school?

Thank you both!

We are actually trying to understand the different streams then select the schools under the desired stream, otherwise we really don't know the differences between so many schools.

At this moment we are thinking to follow IB rather than a pure international school because we need our son to know Chinese, and preferably also Mandarin. We are overseas returnees, going overseas is in our plan for sure. So we would like our son to learn Chinese now but also able to follow the international curriculum that will make the overseas transfer easier.

Do you know if Non international IB schools have Chinese as a mandatory subject, what about Mandarine?

讀IB又想中文好一點？
蔡継有(私校）：小學中學有自己的課程，提供IBDP.
真道（直資）：同樣有自己的課程，提供DSE, IBDP兩個選擇。
維多利亞（私校）：through train IB school。
弘立（私校）：through train IB school。
以上四間學生以香港人為主，中英文能力均佳。不過也有説弘立不少學生均是以普通話為母語。
啟新(私校）：through train IB school, 是ESF屬下學校，有繁簡中文，non Chinese 約有三成，playground language是英文。
學普通話與學中文是兩碼子事，而且IB課程的中文要求到中學是頗嚇人的。（我仔正進入中學階段）

想佢中文好係比較international school來講, 學Chinese方面我地priority係咁1. 䛊中文先,2.䛊普通話同簡體字(因為更加少選擇）
請問啟新有繁簡中文兩樣都係mandatory?

知唔知Creative情況又點呢？

啟新從year 1開始要上中文，因程度而分，Chinese as foreign language的學生學簡體字，Chinese as native language繁體字，大部分國際學校以普通話為中文課的授課語言。

IBDP要求考核兩種語文，因此香港的IB School大部分是中文加英文，少量是英文配西班牙文、法文、德文、日文; 也有自修印度語文等。
至於中史，較少觸及、沒有獨立一科。

IB as a curriculum and languages offered in IB are two different things. Don't get confused.

IB students in England may study English and French. Or English and German. Not necessarily Chinese.

Thanks everyone for your sharing.

We have done more research on IB curriculum, and found out there are not many non international primary schools offer IB.

We understand IB students need to choose subjects (e.g. 2 language subjects), do they need to choose subjects in primary school too? Or are all subjects pretty much "fixed" by the curriculum in primary? Or does it depend on the school itself?

The choice of subjects come when you start to embark on the 2 year IB diploma programme which ultimately takes you to the public exam. There are strictly speaking 3 stages in IB: PYP (primary), MYP (middle school) and IB diploma.
You don't need to take PYP and MYP to take IB diploma. But since IB diploma involves a couple of long essays (ToK and a 4000 words extended essay) and therefore schools tend to prepare the students the necessary skills well ahead in primary or middle school.
Some international schools or non IS IB schools like CKY in HK offer Igcse in year 10 and 11 followed by IB diploma in year 12 and 13, while some offer IB all the way up from PYP (primary) and some only from MYP
Alternatively there is an IS which only offers IB diploma called Li Po Chun United world college.
In IB diploma you need to choose 6 subjects. IB emphasises holistic development of a person and therefore the 6 subjects must involve languages (usually English and one more language), maths, science and humanities, plus optional subjects within creative art.
And then you have to choose standard level and higher level. Some schools encourage students to take 3 high 3 standard.
Languages are also classified into A and B, being first and second

IB提供PYP(小學）、MYP(中學）及DP(預科）課程。在香港提供PYP及DP的學校較多，反而MYP較少。

PYP時期，一如大部分國際學校，不太分科；以啟新為例：中文、英文、數學、音樂、體育、美術，似外便是unit of inquiry, 每年六個單元。學校的安排是由class teacher任教英數和unit of inquiry, 其他節數較少的科目就由専科老師擔任。

中文科一個星期五節；ESF系統因應學生程度分不同pathway授課。

國際學校的學生一般抗拒中文，中學時代有幸入到Chinese group A, 在沒有補習的情況下，有點拉牛上樹。不過小兒感到困難，可能別人覺得容易，不能作凖。入IBO的website查閲IBDP的中文卷sample吧。

不知為何楼主在意中史、其実国際学校学生対中文興趣一般不大、読好中文、已経是天大喜事、若小朋友対歴史真的有興趣、中文好了、就可以自己看歴史書。　我女是Y９、有読HISTORY,也有COVER中国部分歴史、她対始皇帝的興趣非常大、但是要英文来読的。

Guys thanks again. We are really just looking at primary schools now, coz we are more likely to return overseas when he finishes primary school.
We are unlikely to send him to an international school, so will target the schools that offer PYP (the non international ones).
In your opinion, are they going to be much different from those local schools instructed in English?

根據你的要求，提供PYP而又不是國際學校的話，就只有維多利亞(VSA)和啟思(Creative Primary School)了。

IB qualification is worldwide recognised. All local universities accept IB diploma as their entrance qualification.

Non jupas system . 但有些學系如中大醫學院限制了non jupas 入醫科的比例.

HK - apply via non jupas system; UK - apply via UCAS.

Any comments can be shared on 啟思？ I heard it is a happy school, but is it at the cost of teaching quality? Also noticed the instruction language at primary school is Chinese, the website doesnt even have an English version (not sure if I have missed anything). What is the English ability like of their students?

Save the Chinese Education system, the highest candidates who take part in the college entrance examination is AP and SAT. As such the US college entrance qualification is recognized worldwide for college entrance purpose save that a small number of UK colleges (probably 2 to 3) which do not accept AP and SAT as college entrance qualification for medicine course.
In Hong Kong, all universities recognized AP/SAT as college entrance qualification.

All major English speaking countries, as far as I know, accept AP / SAT as college entrance qualification. Those countries include Australia, Canada and UK.
In fact, as a college entrance qualification, AP/SAT is as good as IB.
