Hi, anyone in ESF Bradbury or other ESF schools and can comment on their level of Putonghua? I would like my son to learn fluent mandarin and will be able to read, write and speak.  He has been going to another International school as well as a local school kindergarten. He has exposure in both languages at the moment. His mother tongue is English, but he can speak Cantonese fluently as well.

I am debating if I should send him to ESF Bradbury or English as a medium local school (e.g. St Joseph, DBS, PLK Camoes, St Francis of Assissi's, etc..) Do you have any comments or suggestions?

Deep down I think he will be happier in ESF. But on the other hand, kids are very adaptable and can cope well if he goes to a local school that is more tough acedamically.  What's your thoughts?  Thank you.

I would not go for ESF for its minimal mandarin. Go for local school if you aim at more academic in primary or other private schools.

No need to debate at the moment. Apply ALL and get ALL the offers on hand first.
Then come back and begin to struggle which one will fit your son.

I would suggest HKUGA or CKY or SPCC or St Stephens.   These  are local schools that teach in PTH and English.

Adaptation to HK education system likely means an erosion of one's creativity, if you do not mind I put it in this way.

以前我唔明點解講無倉意,到現在都唔係好明,只係明d唔明d. 但我發覺性格上is 同Ls 好大分別。同由於成日做project,好多時都係搜尋資料後就做power point.好少見有書出現係我面前。

Thanks for all your advice. It would be ideal to find a school that is in between Local and ESF. I want him to have creativity and more well balanced (have time to do sports and not just studying for dictation and exams). I guess will see which schools accept him and decide accordingly.
From the feedback, seems like DBS is not as academically demanding as I expected as my colleague's son is there and think the amount of homework is not as much as one would expect.

I think given the economic trend, having a strong Chinese / Mandarin foundation is very important career wise in the next decades

Language is definitely very important but choosing a school is much more than just language. I personally would not rate language as "the" most important aspect of education at the expense of everything else.
