Hi parents, did anyone get an email for chinese assessment interview? I just got one today for my daugther. I applied her to be in regular chinese class. I am surprised to get an interview as she is a local chinese. I want to ask those parents whose children are currently with ymca, is it hard to get in the regular chinese class? If she gets accepted to the east stream, will she get a chance to move back to regular later? Is she getting the interview because she seems doesnt speak Mandarin from family background?
I am kind of debating, I want to put her in ymca because I want her to have a happy and creative learning while gets to learn chinese and math as main stream school....
Any parents here having children studying in the easier chinese syllabus? How do you think about it?
Thanks all!

Rebecca, I received the same email yesterday and I was, like you, surprised and worried in the same time. I feel exactly like you said. I thought the regular Chinese class is for the students whose mother tongue is Chinese (Cantonese / Mandarin) and the alternative class for those whose mother tongue is anything other than Chinese. Obviously it seems I was wrong ?!?
I am worried because Putonghua is never a language in our household (we are Cantonese and English bilingual family), and my son's only exposure to Putonghua is his twice half-an-hour per week PTH lesson in his kindie. Having said so it is understandable that his PTH level is probably below par (!!!) and not able to meet the school's regular class standard? However, does it mean his Chinese standard is poor? I can say certainly not. If my son is put into the alternative class purely because his PTH is below average, I would find it like a joke 😦😦

Hi Jessica, thanks so much for your sharing! You exactly share my heart !!!! My daugther is at the exact same situatio, attending half day school with once a week Mandarin class. She will for sure fail in the Mandarin assessment.... But honestly her chinese level.is not that bad...I am.wondering if I could make a call to school to understand the process.
Would.really appreciate if Any current ymca parents can share your experience.

I also receive an email for my son and really worry about the assessment because he learn Chinese by using Cantonese in local kindergarten. We also expect him to take the Chinese Language Exam in local system when in secondary school. If he takes the alternative Chinese class, he definitely cannot meet the standard in studying local syllabus in Chinese Language.

Further, I guess the assessment for even a Chinese family may due to the loads of application for regular Chinese class. May be the Chinese teacher ( for regular Chinese) cannot accommodate the teaching load of too many students as there are 5 classes open for this Sep.
😰

Hi parents, I called the school asked about the assessment and sharesnour concern about possibly need to take alternative chinese. The assessment is actually not as serious as it might sounded in the email. The staff said that the interview is for teacher to understand the chinese level of the kids better. And they expected local cantonese kids would not communicate well in madanrin. The rule of thumb is the students will For sure fall into the alternative chinese class if both set of parents are non-chinese speaking. They will honor chinese the parents election of class for children.
I feel a lot better talking to the staff. Hope the information helps.
