My child studied there for 2.5 years and now changed to other school. KIS is a very good school with small class ( around 20-22 students); around 70% Korean 10% European 10% Chinese 10% others. Their academic level is good and students are kind and friendly.

They have 2 streams, korean and international stream. They run the british system. The english level in the international stream is higher.

The present school is very close to our home and this helps us a lot because we have a new born baby. The English standard is good. My boy did not speak any Chinese at KIS because most of them only spoke English. Korean only spoke Korean language and English. European only spoke European lanuage abd English. Most of Chinese are ABC and only speak English.

We are there for a year already. The academic standard is not low at all and generally the kids speak good English. We like the small class teaching and family feel to the school. Which year of study are you looking at littlesisi?

If his english proficiency is good, he can have other options. Otherwise, KIS is a great choice to immerse him in an English speaking environment. When his english level gets higher, he can always transfer to another international school.

I suggest you arrange for a school visit with the school and try to get a feel for yourself. So far I think in my kid's class most are happy with the school.

My two daughters just finished an interview in KIS last week, my elder daughter(P.4 next year) passed the test but my younger daughter (P.3 next year) is now on the waiting list. The principal said her english standard is little bit lower than they expected, so she needs support in class and the class for those students is full now. We need to wait until mid of June. I am so headache now.

Sorry for the late reply - I noticed this has been answered already. Yes you can email or call the school to arrange for a visit. The school doesn't really have open day (although it has a fair every November) so best just to arrange a visit.

I don't think the background matters much - but I do think your kid needs to understand simple instructions in English to pass the interview. We speak Cantonese at home too although we did send our kid to an international kindergarten in K1.

We applied when our kid was in K1 - always calls first to make sure you are applying for the right year (cut off time is Aug 31 I think - always double check first). Reception is full-day.

My son started studying in the school from Reception and he will be in Year 4 after the summer holiday. This school is supported by the Korean government and mainly serve for the Korean families in HK so I think it is more 'eastern style' compared with other international schools. The school has big changes in last several years as the no. of students increased (there was only one class in each grade and no Year 13 before). Another reason I chose this school before as it has more mandarin class than other IS (4 classes per wk) and the students in the class will divided into several groups based on their Chinese standard.

English, math and science of KIS is using Cambridge program for the primary section and the students need to take the external examination at year 6. I think IS and local school are using different methods for teaching Math. IS is more focusing on the concept of each topic instead of calculation training. I just know my son (should be P2 in local school) learnt fraction last month and they use a lot of graphics to let the students to understand what it is.

The textbook will be kept in the school until the summer holiday so you don't know what the teacher taught. You can spend some time to check if your understand all the materials in the textbook in Summer holiday.

Not sure if my response is going to be helpful, but KIS has progress report every quarter so you get to see how your kid's progress in each subject is - if there is a concern with math, it will probably show up in the report/ discussed in the parents' meeting. So I'd say not to worry. However, for parents who like the "drilling", my personal position is there is no harm unless your kid is over-doing it. But I wouldn't expect the teacher expects extra tuition from outside as they should be able to teach according to the curriculum and the exam syllabus for Year 6 checkpoint (this thinking will be very different from some local schools as well, where often you will have test papers with levels way beyond what was being taught at school).

So far KIS and kisngsu-chekiang international. I like the small class teaching in KIS, it is really tempting. I have applied the summer course for my son. Will definitely go for it if he likes it.

You shall not consider kisngsu-chekiang. This school is Second tier teaching. I know an IB girl who has been there for many years, but her english is still "shit". People just speak Cantonese there.

1. You have to bring all the textbook to on the 1st or 2nd school day

I have to comment that they have quite a good variety of food to choose from daily. The choices are really balanced. They have Chinese, Korean, Japanese, western, Southeast Asian, vegetarian...so the kid got to try a bit of everything.

One thing I am not sure is if you choose to bring your own lunch, then perhaps you should bring your own utensils. But yes if you go for cafeteria lunch then no need to bring anything.

I think the first question from me is what's the concern with having South Asian kids in school (I think you meant Indians and Pakistanis) - in an international school setting, and even in a few local schools, we have to accept the fact that there are many non-Chinese students and we have to be open-minded about making friends with kids from different nationalities and understanding their culture. This is one of the biggest values of attending an international school.

Specifically on your question though, the answer is no. In my kid's class in the past academic year, there were only 2 Indian kids out of the 19 kids in the class. And both of the Indian students did very well academically and were amongst the friendliest kids in the class.

You have to communicate with the teacher in English and your kid should apply for year 4 in he/she's in P3. Only a few students are can from South Asia and actually more than 50% of the primary students come from Korea and Japan. I believe HK students will more than Japanese students in the coming year.

Actually it may be Year 3 or Year 4 depending on the cut-off age (on Aug 31). Best if you can call up school to double check. If they say Year 3 and you'd like your child to go to Year 4, perhaps you need to discuss with school on the arrangement.

Most international schools reach simplified Chinese. If that's your main concern, go to local school. No one concerns about simplified vs traditional Chinese within the schools. Ultimately, Chinese is not the most common world language yet, parents in IS concern English more.
