According to the dictionary~"on the shelf". To be honest, I read some local exercise teaching "in the shelf".

erm.. I would say never.

In a cupboard and on a shelf. I have never heard "in a shelf". Due to the very nature that a shelf is just a plank of wood. You wouldnt put a book in the plank of wood, you put the book on the piece of wood, which is called a "shelf".
