她好有自己主見、如果我自行決定、she wl get very upset.  但日後我又怕応付吾到.  不知如何決択? Continuing learning French at Alliance Francaise (but do not take French in school) is also an option but she still says no.  I think part of it is peer pessure.  Also we are planning going to uk to study 6-form so French might be a plus for her if she can handle it.   Any advice for me? Many thanks.

Go for French.

(1) She likes it.

(2) She can always switch back to Chinese if French proves to be too difficult. Chinese won't fade away because she is surrounded by that language, but she may not have this good opportunity again with French if she misses it now.

FattyDaddy, taking French means she has to study Chinese as well as French but not just French.

Still the same number of hours at school, right? It simply means she'll have fewer hours on Chinese.

前幾日已經有媽咪問左我,答案是比佢讀兩科是非常無問題的,除非影響她現在念中文的path。例如在最高level跌落低一個level

rush to airport, hope can write more later。

Yup, 2 times per week for Chinese instead of 3 now.

Annie, safe journey.  Cant wait for your opinion.  Pathway stays the same unless she does badly next year.

French is mainstream, many countries in the world speak it, including one country relevant to many Hongkongers. No prize for guessing which country it is, and no it is not France :D

Unfortunately HK does not have the proper environment to learn French. I took French throughout upper primary and high school until graduation and had sufficient exposure back home (in Canada) via publications, media & tourism (to neighboring cities).

I thought my son can acquire French here in HK but after 2 years of weekly classes (from 4 months of age) we had to give in. (A) He had no French friends as French kids here tend to stick to each other (except for his best buddy who is half French half Japanese, but his Japanese is way better then his French and he himself refuses to speak French although his first 3.5 years of life was spent in Paris!), (B) There is not exposure in the environment: no one on the street speak it, no signage in French, no announcement in French, and most importantly, (C) He has to learn English, Canto AND Mando already. [There are other reasons why we had to give up as well, which has something to do with my son's unique disability which becomes off topic here]

However, Mighty, i am glad your girl is willing to learn it, and if other classmates become her inspiration, you should be happy (hey at least they are not enticing her to do anything illegal ). My son is way younger but may i suggest to use Chinese learning (your concern) as the trade off to you agreeing to let her learn French? It can be either addition Chinese classes outside, or that she must keep to a certain grade in Chinese in school in order to proceed with learning French. That way, she is motivated. Hopefully :)

(It works for my son, age 4, in his willingness to try to learn an instrument if i let him play Tennis. LOL)

This is true, but then what is the expectation? If the expectation is to speak French at the same fluency as English, obviously that won't happen, but to speak it as a foreign language is achievable.

In a country like UK, no one in the streets speak French or Spanish, there are no signage or announcements in these languages either, yet it is quite common for UK children to study these languages. They probably won't speak these languages well, but then they are not expected to.

I may offer another point to consider. What does she wanna do after studies? Like if she wanna be a journalist, it is always better if one can manage more languages. But if she wanna be an IT professional, to know French is nothing harmful nor beneficial. As to the time for French and Chinese, a juggling task for herself to handle.

Thank you for all the replies above.  Very subjective, informative and made me asking myself lots of questions.

Jolalee, in fact i hv already told her that taking French does not mean she can spend less time on Chinese. She said she understands (at least at this point).

Fattydaddy, we have some British relations so that is why we introduced her to French instead of Spanish.  Some people might think that it is not a good move as more people speak Spanish and Spanish is relatively easier to learn.

Torunpoland, good point.  I dont know what my daughter wants to do in future (coz that changes every week if you ask her ).  But definitely capability wise, she wont become an IT person.
