We've received play visit invitation last week for Abacus.
It's in late Jan.
You can actually check the school calendar, the interview date is marked down there.

We registered and being assigned into groups before getting into the school. There were many toys which all children were free to play with. Around two teachers asked questions to each child. Basic questions were to ask the child to speak out his/her name and color or shape of the toys nearby. The teacher would try to interact with the children by asking them to follow their instructions, or to have further conversation in regard to the toys around. My son is hopeless as he was unwilling to respond to the teachers. Good luck to you all ~

yes, your child will be put on waitlist even he/she success for the interview. Offer will be given to your child if other children drop the offer.

Received interview invitation for Hillside campus, late Jan, lunch time.

The letter specifies that even if the kid passes the interview, he will be put on waiting list and would not be able to start in Agust 2014. Looks like the Hillside campus received over 700 applications this year and they plan to interview around 300 for 176 seats. Offer could be made even after Sept 2014 or during school year until the 176 seats are all filled. AM or PM will be decided through lottery.

Debating whether we should still go to the interview as we have accepted offer from another kindergarten and we probably won't go for ESF even if it gives us an offer in the end.....but we did pay HKD300 for this interview in advance....

I checked from website & other forums, it seems that ESF has categorized applications into 3 groups, 1. Place reserve and need to pass in play visit; 2. Place in waiting list but still invite to play visit, place will be available if 1. give up; 3. No invitation, just put into waiting list. Please correct me if I interpret it wrongly

Susu922, i had been Victoria interview for my son's PN 2014 intake. I would suggest you to attend to ESF interview. Two schools are good but they are a bit difference in styles and school setting. If you have already paid your $300, you can participle as joining the open house.

in my understanding, the group play / interview only intends to find out if the child can speak/listen to english, instead of using to determine whether you get a place or not. Am I correct?

Thank you. Discussed with my husband and we decided to attend the play visit -- a good chance to know more about the school and it doesn't hurt any way.

Also, in case my little boy doesn't fit in Vic, he would at least have a back up (if an offer were given by ESF at the time when we need it).

But after all, unless something extraodinary takes place, I prefer to have my little one stay at one school during K1 - K3. A stable environment is important for young kids, I think.

Four years ago when my elder girl applied for yr 1, most of her TY schoolmates did go to Renaissance, discovery or ESF primary schools. A few will go other private international schools.

I refer to juju207, as my last reply could not be sent. Last year my daughter went to another school finally as well, but it is better to have our kids more alternatives for k1. This year our son will also attend hillside play visit 23/1 pm. No Cat 1 or Cat 2 now, now it's only their English levels determine.

My daughter is also a December baby, speaking full sentence is just mission impossible....

Totally agree with little pig. I attended one local kindy interview. It required the parents 圍圈舉手搶答問題。我没有再in 其他local kindy. 我覺得有㸃走火入魔。只是󰀃玩弄家長。

I do not think so, but i cannot be sure as i am not the grading teacher.

I saw a father brought the helper along, and just let the helper to play with the child. I did not hear any bad comments from the grading teacher when two teachers were exchanging opinions after the interview. I guess they just want to see whether the child can survive in the English environment.

The way they did it in previous years was one parent would play with the child and the other would sit through a presentation given by the principal, so it is pretty obvious which is the important part. The father should have accompanied the child while the helper sat through the presentation. If only one parent could attend, give the presentation a miss.

Of course it would be best if both parents could go, but if circumstances only allow one to go, then that parent should accompany the child during play while the helper / grandparent / friend attend the presentation, or even skip the presentation altogether since they don't bother to note who is or isn't at the presentation.

If you have already attended a play visit back in December, that means your child has some kind of priority, i.e. staff, sibling, or alumni priority, so may be they don't think they need to give a presentation to this group of parents because these parents should already know about the school.

The interview involved 5 to 6 child/parent pairs and 2 teachers, basically they just asked the parents to play with their child and the teachers would observe and also go round to chat with each pair, just the usual social conversation, no probing questions. Towards the end they would ask the children to join in a group sing and dance and that was it, the whole thing lasted about half an hour.

If the child could chat with the teacher fluently in English that would be excellent, but most 2 year olds aren't very talkative or responsive so it is important that the parent should talk more and show that the child could understand English and react accordingly.

The Principal was not involved other than giving a presentation, and it seems that this part is sometimes skipped depending on circumstances. In any case, there was not much in the presentation which could not be learned from the school's website.

Just finished the Hillside play visit.  Was there a presentation??

I brought our helper since my husband can't make it.  Both the helper and me were allowed to enter the classroom.

4 teachers + approxiamtely 10 kids each group, 7 groups in total.

Free play outside (15 minutes) --> entering classroom --> Free play in classroom (15 minutes) ---> circle time (dancing 5 minutes + story time 10 minutes + watching a cartoon vedio for 2 minutes) ---> bye bye song

Teachers would walk around to chat with each family (mainly the kid in my case). No specific question for the parents.

Teachers are very good and patient.

p.s. Surprisingly, we met quite a few old frds and my son's playmates at the interview. A nice reunion:)

Evidently, the exact format differs from school to school and from time to time.

However the main theme seems to be the same, i.e. they want to assess how the child interacts with parent, teacher, and other children over usual play activities.
