no, it is a private lesson. We pay per time. I pay at the end of the lesson each time. So if I cannot come, I will tell my teacher and that is ok. Of course, you cannot do this all the time. Occasionally it should be ok and the teacher should not mind at all.
We started in March. Until now we skipped two lessons, and the teacher skipped two lessons due to his personal reasons. So far so good.

we just tell our piano teacher in advance which is normally ok for her. same case applies, if she is out of town, she will tell us beforehand.

我每星期都上堂，除非長假期去旅行。如學生請假需補課。

I try to have a fixed number of lessons per month, and arrange make up classes when needed.
If the student is as serious about learning as the teacher about teaching, then regular lessons are just a way to show commitment.
