我小朋友有一點phonics 底子,我會用「拆字」來讓他學習spelling. 這方法可能很普遍的,我小時候也是這樣學的。
For example, to learn to spell words like
NOVEMBER , what I do with my kid (4years old) is NO-VEM-BER
HILARIOUS (HI-LA-R IOUS)
It works wonder with my little one. Hope it's working for your too. ATMF, it should works even better for older kids.
To be honest, 5 years old is a little small, you don't have to worry much.
Give the little one a bit of time, begins with easy phonics words spelling games, for example:
You write the word CAT then ask him to read or read with him using phonics blending method, then you write FAT and do the same... Followed by SAT...
After a few practice, you can ask him to complete the word ??AT (for MAT), and HA?? (For HAT).. This is to help him make sense of SPELLING English words.
As he progresses, you can add on the diphthongs and more complicated words.
My nephew (5years old too) likes football a lot. We practiced words contain OO diphthong sound, and he was able to spelling so many new words with OO sounds from the word FOOT (HOOK, NOOD, MOON, SHOOT, CHOOSE) Btw, he is a native English speaker, and he has large English vocabs anyway.
