We live near sai kung town center, sotravelling to ESF abcus and ESF WKS are the same distance. My kid is category 1and currently goes to playgroup at ESF abcus. Which ESF kindergarten should Iapply? Any mummy could give some advice or comment would be much appreciated.

My main concern of ESF abcus is the mosquitoesthere – I don’t want my kid get beaten by mosquitoes there for 2 years. While themain concern of ESF WKS is it is said that the campus is relatively smaller andthere is no outdoor playing area(is this correct?)

Hi
May I know what is category 1?

Thank you

I think the kids who speak English are category 1, while the kids who speak Cantonese are category 2

ESF schools have removed the Cat 1/Cat 2 categorization (in line with what the ESF primaries have done).  The Cat 1/Cat 2 designation has been replaced with the more vague priority of children who "can benefit from an English-medium education".

To help assess this latter criteria, ESF primaries have now added the requirement of a parent statement (when applying) and a parent interview (separate from the child interview).

I don't think ESF kindergartens are demanding that yet (statement/parent interview) but it would not surprise me if they did in the future.

In a way they are already doing it, during the kindergarten play visit (interview), the child is supposed to be accompanied by a parent, and a teacher will come round to talk to each pair of child/parent. Although the main purpose is to assess the child, I believe the parent plays an important part too, especially if the child does not communicate much, which is typical of 2 year-olds.

saikungmama, i understand your frustration here as everyone is going off topic here (since you stated the old "Cat 1" system, which is another subject of discussion). I think the lack of response is due to the fact no child can go to both Abacus & WKS, so it is hard to compare the two. Sorry i am not from that area so i have no idea either.

Maybe you can ask parents with kids in WKS or Abacus to share their experiences and views of the schools.

jolalee, thanks for your reply. You are right, maybe the only mummies who can provide compassion are the ones who sent their kids to Abcus playgroup and WKS for Kindergarten.
