In the UK and Ireland you can play the pieces set for the previous year until the end of May. In other countries the overlap period for pieces is a full year (until the end of December).

You cannot mix pieces from the old and new syllabuses during these overlap periods. In all countries the overlap applies to pieces only: any changes to scales, sight-reading or aural tests come into effect on 1 January of the year the new syllabus begins.

New syllabuses are usually published around six months before their start date, to give candidates and teachers time to prepare.

2013 pieces can be used in late 2014 in exams taken in HK

a.Syllabuses for the various subjects are updated periodically. All new syllabuses are valid from 1 January of their year of introduction. Advance notice of any syllabus change is given in the syllabus updates, and in ABRSM’s magazine, Libretto. The introduction of new scale requirements, sight-reading and/or aural tests does not necessarily coincide with the introduction of new pieces (the latter being the most frequent element of syllabus review).
b.In the first year of any new Practical syllabus, candidates may choose to perform pieces as set in the lists of the preceding syllabus, but they may not combine pieces from the preceding and new syllabuses (except in the case of items that appear in both). No such overlap period applies to any new scale requirements, sight-reading and/or aural tests, which take effect from 1 January of their year of introduction.

This is what you want.

In 2015, candidates may play set pieces from the 2013 & 2014 syllabus as follows:

UK & Republic of Ireland – until the end of Period A (spring exams) 2015
All other countries – until 31 December 2015

They are tested as usual unless there is a major change announced.
