I have visited several boarding schools. I want to say some elements to be considered as good boarding house.The hard ware is similar between different schools. One key factor is that the boarding house should has system to let
student to grow up like a big family. Every student is responsible to clean up and make house clean and tidy. Elder boarders should help younger boarder in academic and personal aspect. Housemaster or housemistress should be role model for boarders.

I would like to say schools with long history, international mind, and application without agent. My son' school has 30% boarders, quiet international, among the oldest schools in UK and close to London.

I don't know many schools, but I did visit several schools myself. I would say no school is one-size-fit-all. The combination of academic level, history of school, % of boarders, % of international students, location, personal contact with registration officer, teachers, housemaster/housemistress and principal, and chance of admission will make the difference. The facilities are quiet similar for typical British independent schools. I will focus on teachers and school policy. Students are much benefitted by high-value-added schools. It means schools are not just looking for academically successful students, but above average students and stretch them to their limit.
