Yes.  There is a wait list.  At this stage, it is to announce results for those who get straight-in,usually Singaporeans and a very very few no. of HK ppl.

Although it was never told how it works, I guess --- at this stage, not all the seats are released and some are 'reserved' for some very late/exceptional applications of Singaporeans in the coming months.

If you are on the wait-list, it would become clearer in April/May when some seats will be 'released".
Or the very last chance will be after Sept 2014.

But, frankly, "unable to offer a place" = a friendly way of saying "rejected"

Best wishes!

My son's classmate's younger sister got an acceptance letter before CNY.  SIS's established practice in the past few years was the same - i.e. first batch of letters were sent before CNY.

If you are on the waiting list -- April/May would be a chance, or the very final ones = September.
Good luck!

As singaporean is supposed have priority to get in, therefore first batch will usually cover most of singaporean and some nonsingaporean with top performance. Remaining vacancies will be filled in second batch. As there is another deadline for late application which is logically for xpat from singapore.

Yes, this is real cases. Sis never promise guareete for singaporean but just a priority .... They always put performance as the top scoring criteria as i knew all the way. They will rank kids in the order of performance , the first 100 top kids will be granted a seat on yheir PY1. If  at the end two kids w same performance but only one seat, they will let the singaporean in. This is what i heard and how they handle application...and seems they did follow this rule by observing thosr success applicants. All of them are in certain smart style. In the past years, there are quite some friends they said they knew management in sis but still cannot get an offer via Relationship. Waiting list should be in this performance ranking too.

Yes I heard such case before but from my friends experience, their kids didn't perform that well (grabbed the teacher's pen and refused to answer their questions), the teacher called the parent and asked them to reconsider if sis is the right place for their kids. But somehow they got an offer. I think for those Singaporean kids who are rejected by sis, they can write a letter to MOE and raise up an issue/ask for help. Not sure if it helps but no harm to have a try. My understanding is that government would strongly advise against rejecting citizens.

Yes, I spoke to SIS admission officer and she confirmed that there is indeed no guaranteed spot for Singaporeans coz the school needs to maintain their standard and to recruit suitable candidates.  The process of sifting happens in all schools nowadays and is thought to be necessary for maintaining a good standard.  Having said that, I am not sure whether it is fair to label the children at only 3 years old, and I thought the school plays an important role to bring out the potential in their students, not vice versa.  However this is a separate and complicated issue, not to be discussed here.  Back to SIS, I do not think the selection process is like you mentioned, otherwise the proportion of Singaporeans in the school will never make up 40% (approximate), considering the fact that Singaporeans should be the minority group among overall applicants (we are talking about 4000 over applicants) and I am sure local families who are keen on SIS will be very aggressive and well prepared for the admission.  The admission officer also mentioned that there are indeed different levels of priority, for eg, a Singaporean child with both Singaporean parents will enjoy higher priority than another with one Singaporean parent, or a Singaporean child over a non-Singaporean child with Singaporean parents, etc.  This is fair and acceptable.  As a Singaporean, I do hope the original intention of setting up SIS will not be too distorted, and that is to provide close-to-home education for overseas Singaporeans.

My previous understanding was that all Singaporeans would be acccepted.  Looking back the past two years PY1's acceptance rates -- i.e. Year 12/13 and Year 13/14, Singaporeans occupied roughly 75-80%.... the remaining are other nationalities including HK.

My bold "guesstimation" for PY1 Year 14/15 would be like that perhaps....as what the school has meant.... in order to maintain the standard..... then [I guess] certain % of seats would be set aside for other nationalities, say 20%, then in that case - seat for Singaporeans: other natioanalities would be like 80: 20...

And if the no. of Singaporeans is over 80, say 120, then 40 could not be offered a seat.

I think the school has to work out such a way because in the long run there must be some years in which the no. of Singporeans would be over the no. of seats available [perhaps already happening in Year 14/15?] ... and if the school really wants to tap into the group of elite candidates, they have to do it this way, i.e. competititions within two different groups - One group - Singaporeans, the other group - other nationalities.

Anyway, the above is just my 'guesstimation'

In view of my children's school work -- 1 kid in P1, 2 kids  in PY1, I could say that SIS's programmes/cirriculum are rigorous ---  but if the children can get along with the programmes/cirriculum, you would see super awesome rewards along the path of SIS's education, esp. the development of bilingual capabilities.

  Good luck to all!

Thanks for your useful sharing as always!  I always thought Singaporeans in SIS only make up close to 40%.  80% is a big majority!

70-80% singaporeans only in the past two years, for years before singaporeans % were less.... say in my eldest son class [now at P1--- HK ppl % is about 50%]

some's theory was that, in the past 2 years, as the new SIS secondary school campus was very well established, many more [including Sin] believed the school could provide a very good through-train education from PY to Sec, therefore, the no. of Sin. entering at PY1 increased.

Another theory was that, the no. of Sin. expats in HK has soared in the past years, that's why.....

hope such further details could paint a clearer picture

For PY, not regularly have work sheets which are more common since P1.

For PY1, they started to have English and Chinese reading schemes which require the kids to finish a list of books at your own pace cos' different kids have different capabilities.

If you want to learn more about their school work/ work sheets, you can visit SIS website and take a look at, say, Primary Section where the spelling lists etc could be downloaded by everyone.

作者: forbaby    時間: 14-2-18 22:21

Hi, ikerberg, how do you see the chance for waiting-list kids? According to your experience, roughly how many kids would be on waiting list?
作者: ikerberg    時間: 14-2-19 04:47

回覆 forbaby 的帖子

In my view, the chance for SIS's wait list is not bad.  The main reason is that it is highly likely, at this stage, a certain number of seats [10-20 would be a good guess] for possible reception of late Singaporean candidates' application which will complete perhaps by May.

So, compared to other schools which only get 1 seat when 1 accepted kid quits, if the no. of late applicants is not large, there would be chances that a few to around ten [I guess] seats will be released by May.   The very final seats would be in Sept when some accepted kids finally quit.

Given SIS being a pragmatic school, I think it would not keep a very long waiting list to give false hope to those candidates who see no chance at all to be accepted.

The final question would be whether your kid is at the top portion of the waiting list, which is prioritised according to the marks of kids' performance in the interview.

Hope the above analysis could help!

Good luck!

I believe so, but I don't have an offer yet. I don't know how to get over the waiting months.. As we have no any priorities, I don't know if we really have the luck. Ikerberg, do you know if the waiting list is still valid after Sep? Did you see any kids quit or relocate to other countries during the first term? I am trying to figure out if we can have a last chance when the term starts.
作者: ikerberg    時間: 14-2-21 19:50

There are kids quitting after Sept; say in my eldest son's P1 class, there was a kid going back to Singapore, and the seat was filled by a new student who, I believe, was on the waiting list.   So, it appears that the list would still be there until a new batch created through the interview of the next academic year.

Given we miss the PY1 application, and to apply PY2 or Y1 later, I wonder which year will have more places? Thanks for your advice
作者: ikerberg    時間: 14-2-26 22:46

Minirat, 2nd interview was for borderline cases of Singaporeans and siblings...that is, for those straights-in or straights-out, they need not attend 2nd interview... in fact, for those being offered a 2nd interview, their performance did not reach the 'acceptance bar', so it is in fact the school's kind of gracious measures for the singaporeans/siblings applicants.

Re: Lucky - PY2 - very very limited seats, if you are not singaporeans, nearly no chance at all.  P1 - more seats.   But, chance is highest for PY1 comparatively speaking.

seats for every of the 5 PY2 classes = 22,
seats for every of the 5 P1 classes = about 26
so, seats available for P1 should be [26-22]*5 but, take into account some switch schools or move out from town [about 10], so total seats available for P1's entrance should be about 30.

Singaporeans are almost guaranteed, but who knows no. of SGN applicants at P1 would be > 30 or not?

So, the best entrance opportunity is still at PY1, regardless of being SGN or not.
