標題: ESF Tsing Yi - level of Chinese taught [打印本頁]

We are happy to receive ESF offer today. We love the school's curriculum and priority to their primary schools, but the only downside is v little Chinese taught. We believe Chinese is also important and thinking if it can be supplemented by private tutor and not certain whether it'll be effective.
Can existing parents of ESF or other international schools share your views, your child's level in writing and reading Chinese, and your experience in whether private tutor to learn Chinese has been an effective option or any other option?
Many many thanks

My son will go to a local happy school in the afternoon to learn chinese. I think this is the most effective way.

Think twice before u do so. The total school hours would be more than the elementary students

Unless you have had a good English speaking environment after school or your child has a good talent in languages, I suggest you focusing on English at kindergarten stage.3 hours a day in kindergarten is not enough to build up a good foundation of English for Year 1 admission. It is not funny if your child is sent to "language enrichment group" in K2 before Year 1 interviews.
Too much exposure in Chinese at kindergarten stage may keep your child "in the middle of the river".
You will have so much time to enrich your Chinese in primary stage.

I am quite happy with ESF TY. My daughter looks forward to school everyday. When you have no expectation about their Chinese at all, you may be surprised to hear your kids saying a few words in Putonghua. This is a good start. Nothing is more valuable than happy learning.

2014-15 K1 students still have priority for ESF primary school right?
No, 2014-2015 K2 (not K1) is the last batch to enjoy priority to ESF primary school interviews.

Also is the last batch to enjoy government funding

> HC-Mum no more priority ...as this batch will apply Y1 in 2015...which has been stated ''No more esf kinder priority interview''
Those who will APPLY in 2015 for Y1 (actual classes begin in August 2016) no longer have priority, but the 2014-2015 K2 children, i.e. those who are studying K1 now, will APPLY in September 2014 (not 2015) for Y1, so they still enjoy the interview priority.
ESF's policy changes were prompted by the government's decision to phase out subvention, and that ruling came in June 2013, The agreement between the government and ESF was that those who were already on or had been accepted to board the ESF boat would not be affected, so those who had been accepted to K1 at that time, i.e. 2013-2014 K1, was the last batch, that was the cut-off point.

subvention
- all existing students will continue to benefit from the subvention (frozen at its current level) until they either graduate from ESF schools in Year 13 or leave the system;
- all students joining ESF in the school years 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 will be qualified for Government subvention frozen at current levels as above;
- tuition fees for students entering Year 1 in August 2016 are likely to rise by about 23% to fully cover the reduction in the subvention;
so all ESF schools will be the same school fees as RC in 2016
