If your child was born in April 2012, you should apply in October next year (2014), to start K1 in August 2015.
Application is accepted online at their website from 1-31 October each year, but children starting K1 from 2014 and onwards will no longer have interview priority when applying to ESF primary schools, this is their new policy.

When will they start the interview? Will they short list kids unlike whet the local kindergartens do?

First round of play visits (interviews) starts in January. They do not interview all applicants, but if your child is invited that means he/she stands a good chance of being accepted.

I'm not sure about other ESF kindergartens, the one in Tsing Yi has around 22 children per class.
There are four K1 classes in AM and four in PM, so around 88 children in K1, plus a similar number in K2, so roughly 180 children altogether for the entire school.

For Tsing Yi, they start to teach some Mandarin in K2, around 1 to 2 hours per week. It is more for fun than a serious attempt and certainly not enough for the children to hold a conversation, unless they are from Mandarin speaking families and they learned at home.

My daugher is in K1 now, I found that the Mandrin teacher comes to join in the class quite often, I'm happy for that!

Yes she does go round all the classes, its the same Mandarin teacher for the whole school. In K1 it is all play, in K2 the Mandarin teaching is more formal, but still nothing like the Mandarin classes in local kindergartens. I'm glad you're happy with it, I guess it is a matter of expectations, if parents expect the Mandarin teaching to be similar to local kindergartens then they may be disappointed.

Thanks FattyDaddy.
It's really doesn't matter to me, I do believe kindergarten is a place for kids to play and learn peer social life only.
