Well, given that my baby is not even old enough for most playgroups, I am taking my time to learn about and evaluate both local schools and IS options. Hence, you'd see me in both IS and local school forums doing school research.

The original discussion was around ISs being the stepping stone to top colleges overseas, and my point was that paying for the sometimes overpriced ISs would not be the only way. If some parents buy into that belief then it could be a mistake or a waste of money. I also suspect most people have only encountered Ivy Leagues graduates who used to attend ISs or top local schools. And according to the original discussion, even those from top local schools are now the minority. Such information may lead some EK parents into believing that shelling out the 150K a year PER CHILD is the only way to give their children a "bright future". That's why I voiced my concern and shared my observations and experience, though it was questioned by many because the idea (that a girl from non-top local school could get into an Ivy League by her own merit) was probably too foreign for most EK parents. Interestingly, in my circle high school friends, I'm not the only one as a couple others also went on to attend overseas colleges including Imperial, and hence this idea is well-accepted.
In short, my previous responses were specific to the IS-top overseas colleges relationship, and I wouldn't preclude other reasons / benefits for sending their kids to ISs.

People are not as single minded as you think in just using university placement as the sole criteria of picking IS vs LS. The fact still stands that 90% of the Ivy/Oxbridge grads I know send their kids to an IS, DxS or SPCC. Do your homework, spend a couple years learning from others, and would be interested to know which school you wind up picking.

I was also thinking, what kind of parents would choose IS or LS based on just one criteria on ivy/Oxbridge placement when I read hunnybunny's message above.

I am pro IS too but honestly, I have absolutely no interest in Ivy League whatsoever. Even if my kid just attend a local U is fine for me. I am just so fed up with the local system and monsters parents around. I just want my kid to be happy and with our family background, he cannot become too poor anyway.

Targeting Oxbridge and Ivy may not be the sole purpose , but it is one of the reasons for some parents

我估香港人一般都只識 ivy league，最多加埋 mit，ucla，berkeley，等。
其實美國真係有好多好大學，我反而會看看某高中的學生的興趣有多 diversified，如果有學生入 parsons 這類 design school ，或 williams 這類 liberal art school 等，我更欣賞。這表示高中很專重會懂得栽培學生，讓學生隨自己心意選擇想讀的科，和想入的大學。

I have personally met parents who see getting their kids into top Us as their number one (albeit not the only one) goal. However, I don't know what is more narrow-minded - to work on a long-term educational goal of your kids, or to assume that such parents don't exist just because you have not seen one of them in your social circle. By the way, I have no way and no interest to verify whatever 90% rule, because 1) my college and grad school friends are mostly still single, not to mention having kids, and 2) what matters to me is what I want to do, not what the majority does.

After all, if what I said doesn't apply to you, just change channel. There's really no need to feel offended.

I am not offended until you try to call me narrow minded. You have an exceptional ability to generalize from an example of one. Let me be more blunt. You don't really know what you are talking about. Look at those who are 5 to 15 years ahead of you. There are plenty of Ivy/Oxbridge grads in HK.

When parents have to choose IS or LS, most children are at about 3 to 5 years of age. Taking Ivy and Oxbridge as a "significant criteria" in school selection 15 years before is reasonable to you?

Totally agree! Really can't stand the LS system! I see kids going to IS and are much happier.

given your standard of English, i would worry about your communication with the school, if it is an IS.

I chose IS simply because I don't trust the local system and EDB. I share of the view that most of the ISs are over-priced, we have no choice as the local system is too mess in recent years

The university placement is still a bit far for me to consider
