Hi parents, do you know of any good after school Chinese classes (Cantonese) in HK Island? For ESF year 1 kid with some Chinese foundation(up to K2 at the Chinese medium local kindergarten). Something with reading comprehension and a bit of writing.

I know there's one with branches in CWB and WC called 創世紀 or something. Do you know of any other?

He can't speak much mandarin at this stage. He's been learning Chinese in canto in the kindergarten for the past years and begin to enjoy recognizing Chinese words and making sentences, so I want to keep the momentum. After all, if he knows the words and sentence structures in canto he can easily relate them to mandarin when he's able to speak mandarin later.
Now that he's in the IS and he might eventually lose interest in learning Chinese at all, if I make him learn all those words in mandarin from now on, the unfamiliarity could be rather demotivating. He has just left the Canto medium school and he still enjoys learning Chinese in canto, so I must not let it cool down.
I am less worried about he picking mandarin later given our family circumstance.

我和你有相同的問題，我囝囝又係讀緊ESF yr1, 我又係想搵廣東話的中文課或中文老師給他，不過，我囝囝無讀過local kinder，所以中文很差，平時亦唔肯講廣東話，我都在物色緊課程比佢，我理想係搵多1-2個小朋友，搵個私人補習老師來我家上課，但搵來搵去都搵唔到，廣東話教中文的幼兒補習老師真係好難搵，反而我已經搵到另一個小朋友一齊補，但無老師，好無奈。我今早上過早慧，課程有系統，都好多人話佢幾好，問題係我覺得可能偏向少趣味，有D似補習，我想搵到趣味性高D的課程，唔想佢驚咗中文。

我囝以前都有去用廣東話上堂教中文的班，又試過創閱學的廣東話認字班，其實上得唔錯，但後來我衰，走去同佢轉咗用普通話上認字班，佢就開始好抗拒，我估相對廣東話，佢更加唔明老師所講的內容，上咗兩堂直情唔肯入課室.....之後我諗清楚，佢始終比較接受廣東話，用廣東話教佢認字係會好D，普通話就留番學校教佢。

我朋友用緊一個上門的私人幼兒中文老師，兩個小朋友一齊補，講故事玩遊戲比賽加寫吓字認吓字咁，我聽落幾好，我又想搵佢補，點知佢話我屋企太遠，其實我同我朋友都在港島區，由我朋友度嚟我度只需20-25分鐘，我話比埋的士錢佢都唔肯.......唉！真係好無奈！

应该自己用廣東話在家教孩子的中文字, 另找普通话老师帮忙教普通话和加强中文底子.

講故事玩遊戲比賽加寫吓字認吓字,这点工夫,妈妈也能胜任啊!

面对陌生事物有抗拒, 很正常的. 努力寻找合适有趣的老师,问题便可以解决了.

Hi aidan08, we have tried 創世紀last year and I also have the same point of view like you, more like tutorial and with a number of take home exercises.

What about 學林？I called to ask but they only have classes for primary kids. Any ideas about that?

其實我自己也有教他，但孩子的普遍問題是外人教會乖點聽話點，我教他時，他感覺不像上課，比較活躍，以為在玩！而且，自己教有個問題是沒有那麼系統化，現在他的程度我尚可勝任，再進一步我可謂芒無頭緒！

普通話私人老師我本身也有請來教兒子，現在仍是很簡單的對話，所知實在不多，他明白廣東話肯定比普通話多，要開始教認字的話，我選擇廣東話，對他來說會容易點，也沒那麼抗拒。

Same here. He won't want to learn with me. Plus the working mom thingy.

My boy can recognized over 300 Chinese words in canto pronunciation, he learnt from CreatLearning, but that's purely word recognition.

The last time we tried that my boy was literally "illiterate" in Chinese thus the frustration.

可以買Oxford 那套中文教材，自己教。這教材是根據本地學校的小一課程。即 grade 2 程度。

我自己教個囡時，她成日以為玩，慢慢便習慣，不要放棄自己教中文（認字），盡力自己教中文而建立父母和她的關係。尤其是讀國際學校的家們，我們少了教育局的規範，小朋友在無壓力環境下學習。我怕無課程跟住學，所以買了牛津小一的教材教她。我是用這方式教她的。自己教她便容易找到她的學習長處及短處，慢慢便找到方法令她有興趣持續學習的方法。

we actually go to 創世紀 too. My kids totally love it! They go in and watch a video and do some exercise. They totally enjoy it a lot!

Hi Kafool, I do think the 創世紀／早慧program could be suitable for what we r looking for, unfortunately I feel a bit overloaded with the take home exercises and even the online homework. Not that I want my kids to learn without putting the effort but I just feel like the schooling/ learning culture here is becoming about the more homework the merrier.
I don't think more is better and we don't really need to rush to do this much in a designated short period of time, why rush? Can't understand...

I bought the kit from Oxford path which is local school syllabus in p1. It may a bit difficult for our child but we could teach her slowly and pick some interested topic for our child . The kit hv a pen to speak in Cantonese and mandarin .
