標題: UCL or HKU?

My son has got the offers/places from:
UCL (University College London): Master of Engineering

HKU (university of Hong Kong): Bachelor of Economic / Bachelor of Economic & Finance

Which one would you prefer? Which one should we give up? Why?

I prefer UCL to HKU on the following reasons (if you could afford to pay more than HK$1.5 million):
(1) London is a truly cosmopolitan city. Your son could have an eye-opening experience if he is prepared to mix up with the foreign students.

(2) His spoken (or written) English should be more fluent due to the fact that he has to communicate with others in English everyday. This is assumed that he would mix with the English and foreign students.

(3) In the same number of year of study, your son should have a bachelor and a master degree.

Thank you for your valuable reply and your views/reasons are exactly the same with us.
However, some of my friends said that HK firms still prefer HKU graduates than overseas, is that true? If just compare with the school itself, which one has a better reputation in HK?

You know, it is uneasy to get a place from HKU and we do need lots of courage to give it up!

I've got few friends who studied civil engineering in UK (not as famous as UCL) but they've got job offers right away after they graduated.

If you can afford the living expenses at UK, it's worth to encourage your son to study at UCL.

He can always apply to study Master of Engineering at HKU later.

Thank you for your reply.
Glad to know that the career path is so good for the UK Civil Engineering graduates. But how about "Mechanical Engineering"?

Please check with HKIE about the recognition of the Master degree first, others are minor.

Thank you. I will check with HKIE soonest.

For civil engineering is the best time for the last decade - 10 infrastructures, demand more than supply.
Mechanical is another story, the competition for scheme A spaces in HK is keen, jobs are ok , but not as promising as civil and structural.

Then, how about study "Economics & Finance" at HKU?

It's a good program, but very demanding and he needs to compete with Chinese elites from mainland. As its very busy, it's difficult to have double majors.
Why he didn't take QFin or Actuarial Study ?

He's from JUPAS or NJ?

He's from Jupas.
His DSE result was not good enough to choose those subjects you mentioned and that's why he chose "E&F" instead. As we know that there are some courses for both E&F and QFin in the 4-year curriculum.

At the same time, his DSE result can meet the offer from UCL. Therefore, we have to make the selection between the above courses.

Engineering and Economics / Finance?  Aren't they 2 completely different subjects?  I thought the most important question is which one your son likes most.

Actually, he loves Maths & Physic.
Therefore, I think those two courses are quite suitable for him.

But the problems are:

1. Study in HK or UK?
2. Which course has a better career path?
3. Which university has a better reputation in HK?...

Very difficult to make a decision!

UCL - Engineering

why one is master degree and one is bachelor?
does it means that UCL also leads to a bachelor degree ( hence 4 years course)? HKU leading to a bachelor degree ( also a 4 year course)?

what does he like? dose he know what jobs these courses leads to?

is mechanical engineering degree leading to Building Services engineer or lift engineer or traffic engineer or MTR's engineers?

is the finance degree leading to an analyst job? or he still needs to take a master degree?

what about a combination of both-- finish engineering degree first, then take a master degree in finance or MBA?

you son is great, I hope mine can give me such " problem" years later.

Thank you for all your kind replies.
mattsmum, I will ask my son to consider the questions you raised.

Thanks a lot!

With an engineering degree he can still sidestep into finance later, but with a finance degree, he will not be able to get back into engineering.
So if he doesn't have a preference for either career path, doing the engineering degree can keep his option open,

I don't know. I guess having a love for Maths & Physics doesn't necessarily means he would like Engineering or Economics / Finance or both.  Just as those who love English may find Law pretty boring.  A lot of the times, people can't make a decision because they don't really have a good understanding of what the subject is about.  It's perfectly understandable especially for young people of your son's age.  I don't know if that is the case with your son.   Perhaps if he could find out more about the 2 subjects and the different career paths each will lead to, he might find it easier to make the decision.  Talking about career paths, sometimes people have a complete misunderstanding as to the actual kind of works involved in each job.  For example, as we watch the soap opera on TV, some people might think that being a pilot, a lawyer or a doctor is really glamorous.  Ask a real pilot, lawyer or doctor, I am sure you will hear a different story.

Adjusted the course successfully from Mechan. MEng to Engineering with Business Finance MEng!
Year 1 & 2   Study economics & accountancy subjects at LSE

Year 1 to 4  Study core, computing, mechanical engineering.... courses at  UCL

Engineering + Business Finance  /  UCL + LSE = worth to go!! :)

That is really good, so did you get throught the adjustment by yourself in hk or throught agent. ucl and lse officially has no vacancy in clearing .

As my son's GCE result could meet the offer and even did better than expected, so he discussed with the faculty and asked for adjustment. Besides, those two courses are at the same faculty as well as the same dept.
Those who haven't got a place at UCL or LSE would not have a chance for changing course.

I see, so do you have to call them up or just by email? I don't quite understand why would the course be provided by two colleges. Lse's  prospectus is not like others and difficult to be understood. Would you mind sending a link of the course?

Please note that my son will go to LSE for some economic courses only for the first two years.

If he wants to register as Engineer in HK in the future, check with HKIE for recognition or chartered in UK first and transfer back to HK if needed in the future.
