My son just completed Year 9. Very good government.boarding school with good academic result. Every year 10+ students go to oxbridge.

Does your son a boarding student or a day school student? What are the compulsory ECAs after school?

My elder son also studies in a state boarding school with excellent academic results but there is hardly any compulsory ECAs after school and he is free to go out of school after lessons until 10:00 pm every day. Also, there is no supplementary class or tutorial for under-performed subjects.

My son is a boarding student. Everyday there are many ECAs after school that you can choose according to your own interest e.g. fencing,drama and even military ECA. For Sunday they will organise different activties for boarder and you can join freely e.g cinema, site visit etc. Some needs to pay but are very cheap.

You can request to the school and there will be supplementary class for you but you may need to pay. They also seperate the students by ability in some subjects and help students to acheive better.

I think Cranbrook school quite balance on academic and personal development.

By the way my son is very happy there and also learn how to bake cake and do some simple cooking.

Actually my son's school also has some ECAs but he chooses not to join them and goes to the boarding house to play online games, sleep or even go out of school.

Unlike state schools, I understand that many private schools with large boarding population would require students to play cricket, rugby, cross-country etc about two hours compulsory after lessons every day. Such arrangement is quite healthy to students.

Hi, I am interested in applying Cranbrook School for my daughter. My daughter was born in July 2001 and is a now a F.1 student of a local school. Not knowing if Cranbrook School will accept her in 2014 as a year-9 student that she will be a month older than year 13.

Any parents can share the experience of applying Cranbrook School?

去年十月試過申請yr10, 她們一定說暫時沒有位，但等到今年五月覆有位，但要test而且要高分才會收，因已定左另外一所學校，拒絕左。cranbrook是一所好學校而且排名高，值得一試。yr 9機會應該好過yr10.

Same as dizidizi, Cranbrook informed us there was one space in Yr 10 in May, but is was too late as i had committed with other SB school. So, pls apply yr 9 asap.

通常香港學生會比本土生大一年, 不用太在意, 學校也沒有嚴格執行年齡限制, 照常申請吧
我囡囡去年也申請轉這校Year 10, 但只得一個位, 競爭大, 她失敗了
Cranbrook是一間好學校, 但女生的校服裙就很難看呀

除Cranbrook 外, 尚有其他state boarding school 推介嗎？co-edu and girl schools are welcome.

I am also looking for good state boarding schools for my kid. Could anyone comment on Old Swinford Hospital, Adam's Grammar School and Sir Roger Manswood? Many thanks!

Hi hinhinmami,

My son applied Sir Roger, Adam's and Royal Grammar before.  They are all grammar school and required an entrance test and interview.
My son got offer from these 3 schools.  For Adam's and Royal Grammar, I know there are about 8 to 9 applicants from Hong Kong.  At the end, both school offered 2 places respectively.
Finally, my son chose Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe.  I consider the location, school ranking and comments by people.
The above 3 schools are good grammar school.  Why don't you try Cranbrook as well?

Hi Cindy,

讀state school 是需要有UK Passport的
如果唔揀grammar school, 可選擇St. George's. 雖不是grammar, 但成績及排名都幾好
朋友既女在那讀Year 11, 佢囡囡話間學校好有讀書氣氛

Odelia,Of course I would like to try Cranbrook but I found from the school's website that it only accepts application for year 9 onward but my son is only 11years old by end of 2014
, and could only apply for year 7. So is Royal Grammar. I also wrote email to St George but no response from the school. Did u apply through agent? Do u know the standard of old swinford hospital? Higher or lower than St George?

I have no idea of Old Swinford, comparing with St. George, their school ranking are very close.
So, I think both are not bad.  If compare with location, Old Swinford is located at West Midlands and St. George is in Hertfordshire, of course, St. George's location is favourable.
Yes, schools accept Year 9 application only, other than Year 9, they called it late application.  Apply anytime if they have places available.  I have no idea of applying Year 7.  You need to write to schools individually.
I applied by myself at the first beginning.  And then I was informed that they appointed HK school agent to do the processing.  So I contact the agent to come aross with my application. It's AA.
For Sir Roger, was self-apply.
