no wonder parents say IB program is more demanding than local curriculum in higher forms in MYP.

My year 11 girl works till 12am almost every night.

My year 11 girl works till 12am almost every night.
My child in year 12 studying IBD also works until mid-night everyday... workload is really very heavy... apart from homework, tests, they have to do a lot of projects and activities required after school and on weekends.

Thanks for your sharing. But she does enjoy her daily work despite 3 hrs, right? or the daily work would amount to pressure to certain extent to her?

We parents here are from different walks of life. For example, for a surgeon, they may need to spend up to hours in doing a surgery. This is a tough work for many others. But if the man doing it enjoy it, he can accept long hours and don't find it a torture. I think for IB homework, if it is research-based plus writing or presentation work, it must take a lot and a lot of time. I think ultimately, whether it is hard work depends on whether they are required to come up with very high standard product. If the students manage to come up with product with certain degree of achievement, they may not mind long hours...am I too simplistic in my thinking?

Thx a lot for your sharing. As a parent, you can't be more happy in seeing such achievement (learning life) of your own children

Thank you for sharing.  Sounds like she will do well in both DP and life.  If one finds their purpose, work is so enjoyable!

At least they are doing something useful and might get them prepared for later journey instead of just learning how to take exams.

Unless you get a big inheritance or you are born special (like elite athletes or artists), to live a good life, you either have to be really really lucky, or you have to work hard, at one time or another. There is no escaping that.

我不敢肯定是否物競天擇,因為對MYP了解不深,所以其他有經驗的家長分享,都是學習機會!
lBDP我覺得是自我挑戰多於圍內比拼。

My daughter may be an outlier. I notice that she has little homework to do at home.  She told me she finished part of her homework at school.  As the homework is given on a weekly basis, I normally see her do homework 2-3 nights a week. For the rest of nights, she reads a lot for fun. She spends a chunk of time on after-school activities just because she likes to meet her friends outside school. To be honest, I don't feel comfortable at this, so I enroll her in some gifted programs.  She is doing well in these gifted programs but never studies more than required. She is always able to keep decent scores for all her subjects, but never wants to push herself a little further. She's in lower years of MYP. Maybe things will change in later years.

It's common for junior secondary students to spend less time on homework than the senior students... my child also did not need to spend a lot of time on homework from Y7-11 (but she took GCSE, not MYP), but rather spent most time on other activities.  Yet in IBD, working hard everyday is the only key.

Hi belledog
Do you know her time management compare with her classmates? Her classmates have the same issue?

How's her workload in previous years?

Also, what subject mix of her studies? Her workload is subject specific or across the board?

WY mom:  Thanks a lot for your sharing and advice. I'll take it as a reference and work with my daughter to make her fully prepared for IBDP.

Shrimpyggy: Thanks.  Ahh, I have to admit I am still not sure whether or not my daughter is truly gifted, because the gifted programs she has been doing are more like advanced-learning or enrichment courses at this stage. She has not yet encountered the difficult part, or the so-called bottleneck. Only till then, we would know by observing how she handles that level of problems.

Back to MYP, from my observation, MYP is good for self-motivated students. The hours spent on homework should not be a yardstick for assessing whether MYP is easy or hard to handle, because students with different levels of ability and self-expectation need different length of time to complete their homework. Some kids spend a lot of time in perfecting their homework, while some kids just complete their homework as quick as possible and submit their work without glancing back, so that they can do other things that interest them. MYP is not intimidating as it sounds, but like other programs, no one can excel in any programs without due commitment.

Hi ANChan59My daughter is quite good with her time mangement, as I feel that, her classmates always work overnight or just sleep for 2-3 hours daily, I meet many parents also complain about this, just like last week, she has 2 tests and 2 assessments, moreover, she has her personal project exhibition in school, which year 11 students spent 9 months to prepare, so you can imagine how much work load she has. In the previous years before year 8, I think it's quite ok, she still had time to play and enjoy her holidays, but now, ' holidays' without work is just a dream!

In that case, just few months to go, and will be easier in IBDP relatively.

DP1 may be easier to handle (as compared with the last year of MYP) given (i) the choice of subjects is optimised for the student as compared with a wider spectrum of mandatory subjects in MYP and (ii) prior experience (e.g. time management) gained in MYP in tackling personal project (re: extended essay, etc. in DP).  For DP2, due to the short duration before DP exam and lots of U applications and interviews, etc. coupled with stress (re: open exam and U entrance competition), it will be very hard for the student.

Can some of you existing MYP parents share some examples of MYP homework and exam questions?
I would like to how will MYP compare with GCE in terms of exam questions.
Thanks,
