Any current DGJS parent can give some comments about homework?

- how long are girls expected to spend on homework everynight?
- DGJS use English as medium of instruction except Chinese.  What is the level Chinese homework compared
to other school?

Thanks.

There are not too many homework and most girls can be able to handle those. No worries ;)

Both English and Chinese are taught at high standard!

I think the workload for homework is huge.  My daughter always finishes her homework at mid night and she doesn't have enough sleep.  Therefore, I need to cut some of her after school activities in order to get more time to sleep.  The situation only acceptable when she was in P.1.  After P.1, lots of homework, tests, dictations and exams will come.  The influence not only on my daughter, my whole family needs to face it and we don't have leisure time.

My daughter now in P.1 and the workload, to me, is very heavy for a P.1 kid.  Every day after school, she will spend 1/2 an hour eating her snack, and then start homework and studying.  The chinese writing homework takes up the most amount of time, and if there is a test or dictation the next day (which happens alot), then she will be stuck at her desk until 10am when it is time to go to bed.  Then on weekends, she needs to catch up on reading reports, diaries, art homework, and studying for tests for the coming week. It was like that for most days in Oct and Nov.  It is very tiring not just for her but also for the parents.

Perhaps this really depends on different kids. My girls find the workload acceptable and so do their close friends. I never have to worry about their homework or academics.

homework is not heavy. You can finish in less than 1 hr. English and chinese are not too tough. but the school has alot of reading scheme which encourage the student to read more.

Strange.  My friend said not much homework on Chinese writing. Maybe it's just during honeymoon period.

I also think that homework load is ok. 12 lines of 中文生字 can hardly be called too much in HK local schools.

this is what they want in the primary junior form.

Thank you all for your comments.  The opinions are very different indeed. Some parents actually think it is a burden to the family. Didn't you expect that when you decided to send your girl to such an elite school as DGS? It sounds like the majority of parents think the homework load is fair.

I think family life and routines must change when kids go to primary school, no matter which one. But I don't think we should expect or accept the whole family to be stressed to limits.
P1 kids are still young, some of them need more time to adapt. Once they are more attentive in class and can write faster with stronger small muscles, they will do better. Let's keep our hopes up!
