Pronunciation and meaning can certainly be different between US and UK. I have not looked into UK dictionaries since I studied in the US and prefer US English.

Not sure if you need one for Chinese one as well. The one from Commercial Press is good but it is a physical book. If anyone has a good suggestion for good electronic Chinese dictionary, please share.

I think Merriam Webster Children's dictionary is the best for children between 5-8 years of age. I wouldn't worry about US vs UK English just yet. If you look at a list of most popular children novelists, they are pretty evenly split between American/British writers.

我個女五歲開始用 Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary, 有齊中英文解釋。佢有時唔識啲中文字，可以查英文嚟學埋。

阿女睇CHAPTER BOOK 從來唔會查字典, 當然我肯定佢係有字唔識LA, 不過佢又睇得津津有味. 我屋企都用Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary, 通常阿女係用尼查中文字點寫

The child will have no interest to read if repeatedly check the dictionary.

多謝介紹，今日上過去添了一些書，跟員工(也可能是老闆)交談下才知道他們已停止網上訂購，做的主要是學校生意及間中的開倉銷售。

其實睇 chapter book 時不用字典為佳,因為這樣可以令小朋友學習得到閱讀書本的前文後理。若果真的不明白那些生字,咁一般 Oxford 字典已可,因為我小朋友也是如此。

我自己認為父母需要認定／分辨小朋友讀課外書的目的。
只要小孩子能夠培養出讀課外書的興趣，日子有功，就必能提昇語文的能力。不過雖然我們最終的目的是著眼於語文能力，郤不能夠不以培養出讀課外書興趣為大前提,因為這個興趣是一生的／長久的，有讀書興趣的人，長大後大可以編一本字典，家長切勿因緊張小朋友一時間認多三數個生字而令讀書成為苦差一件！字典是要有，也要教他們怎樣用，但查看否就讓他們自己作主吧！
最重要的是他們享受閱讀的過程！
