My daughter applies for UK state BS for Yr10 in Sep 13, any advice?  She is an average student in a good. not the top, girl school.
Heard that Wymondham College will interview students in Oct in HK,

Pls call academic Asia for details, you should have policed by now really. Might have been too late. But you could ask the interviewer to grant u a interview still

Thank you for your advice.  Yes! I have contacted the school directly 2 weeks ago and they replied that no place for Yr10 in Sep 13.  So i would like to try again if they come to HK for interviewing HK students.

I have checked with AA.  They replied that for the coming Oct 27~28 education exhibition, wymondham will not join.

Yes , but their teacher will still be in hk, u can ask to meet them. My elder daughter was late in applying last year but i wrote directly for an interview and now she is studying there.

作者: tsangdcf    時間: 12-10-5 14:09

作者: tsangdcf    時間: 12-10-5 14:10

According to my own school search experience last year, almost all good ranked state boarding school do not enroll students for Year 10.  They always say the major intake is Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12.  However, you can still file your application and probably they will call you should there be an unexpected place.  By the way, you should act now!  Do not delay anymore.
Good luck to you.

Thank you Tommy for your advice.  I believe your son is also studying in Wymondham, please kindly further advise how could i contact the Headteacher and request for an interview in HK?

Actually I have contacted almost every co-edu SB schools.  Wymondham, Sexey's, RAA & Hacherill & Cranbrokk replied no Yr 10 places.  I only have 3 replies as follows:
1. St george's (to be interview in UK in Dec)
2. Shaftesbury (interview in HK in Oct)
3. SRM ( test in HK school and to be interview in UK)

Please kindly comment how are these school doing?  Which one you would recommend? For the entrance test, can you advise what would be the contents and formats? Easy or difficult for average student in HK?

My son is studing in Hockerill. When he applied Y10, the school also told me there was no place to him, but they keep him in waiting list.  It was nearly end of Aug, school told me there have a place for him.  So you need to ask them keep in waiting list and check with school when July & Aug.  Good luck!

Thank you Tommy for your advice.  I believe your son is also studying in Wymondha ...
In fact, all the names, email address as well as the telephone numbers of the senior staff working in Wymondham College were uploaded in their school website.  If you have seriously read their website, you must find it.
However, I don't suggest you go direct to the Head Teacher (Principal).  Firstly, the Principal will not come to Hong Kong for the admission interviews.  Two senior teaching staff will come instead.  Secondly, please do not mind I'm a very straight-forward person that, being a parent of Wymondham, I would expect our Principal focus on managing the school affairs rather than managing the candidates' parents.

Furthermore, I don't think the crazy HK style 叩門 will work in Wymondham College.  The admission affairs In Wymondham College, I think it's the same in other UK schools, is led by the Admission Registrar.  All the applications must start from the Admission Registrar and go through a series of standard procedures.  Unlike the Hong Kong elite schools Principals who have absolute power to determine who's in and who's out, British people  set a very good and fair system in many aspects, including the admission policy.  They will adhere to the admission policy and the agreed priority in the selection process.  In case, there are two applicants carrying the same scores and same priority, they will do a lottery by authorized persons to decide which one to take.  Only those very exceptional cases, the Admission Registrar will make a proposal to the Principal and then he makes a final decision.

So, in my opinion, meeting the Principal doesn't help too much.  The appropriate contact point should be the Admission Registrar.  I would suggest you keep contact with the Registrar and update your kid's information to them when he achieves any good results or performance.

I am so sorry that I really get sick of the HK crazy style 叩門.  I just want to protect the good system and tradition run by the British people.

By the way, my younger son will take part in an admission interview on 24th October and we are invited to attend another meeting regarding my elder son's affairs on 27th October conducted at AA.  You can test you luck anyway.

Two weeks ago, my son interviewed by a school headmaster of an independent school and the Registrar had not come to AA for admission interview.  So diff schools adopt diff practices.

Thank you for all of your advice.
I just informed by Wymondham that they will offer an interview to my daughter during their visit to HK in late Oct.  Then, they will open a file first and if luckily a boarding place is open, they will inform us.

This is better than none.  Pls kindly advise what will be about for the interview?

I dont know about this school , sorry.

作者: Waui    時間: 12-10-10 21:02

Dallam School is actually a good school. Although its academic results weren't the best among other state boarding schools, it is improving RAPIDLY. For example, for the three years of IB they did, the first year was like 10% below average, then the second year was on average, and then the third year, it was about 10% ABOVE average. Moreover, all facilities are really new, and the environment is really nice.

Hmm actually my daughter got accepted to Dallam as well, but then also accepted by Hockerill, and she chose Hockerill (although my husband likes Dallam). But seeing as many state boarding schools dont accept year 7s, i think you should still consider it.

Well, based on my elder son's experience, there is no written test nor academic test during the interview.  It's just a casual talk.  They will mainly test the suitability for boarding.  The questions may be:

They just want to find out whether the kids or their parents like boarding?

Hope your son and my son will be successful and become school mates.

He applied for Year 9 next school year, my elder son is now studying Year 10.  Anyway, most of the students came from HK know each other.
Year 10 admission is really rare.  My son reported to me there was no Year 10 new comer this year.  If you really want to get into the school, you may consider and show your interest to be admitted for Year 9 in current school year.

Hi Waui, thanks for your info.  Did u have interview w/ Dallam?  Actually i just contact them by sending school reports , then they offered a yr 10 boarding place right away and asked me to fill in application form.  This is really strange to me.  Did u pay deposit to Dallam and when did Hockerill offer a place to your daughter? Hockerill informed us that I have to wait until Easter time when they know whether any student will leave in 2013.

Hi Little meimei,  Which yr is son going to apply for sep 2013 at wymondham?  My daughter also has interview on Oct 24 and the school would only put her into the waiting list for yr 10 in Sep 2013.  Regret to hear the info from Tommy's son that no yr 10 admitted this year..

My daughter was supposed to have an interview at dallam, but because of our flight time and the principal's time, we were not able to arrange it, so they accepted her after seeing her CV. And Hockerill accepted just recently, but my daughter applied for Yr12, so i guess there are spaces available.

作者: Littlemeimei    時間: 12-10-13 16:30

Hi Tommy & Tsangdcf,

My application is through by AA. I am not sure my boy is in waiting list or other situation. AA only arrange an school interview on 24th Oct. I sent out application 2 days before the deadline 12 Oct.
I am also wonder why College would grant me an interview as the boarding place for year 10 is really rare.
My son just complete the entrance test for Lancester Royal Grammar School.
Do you have any comment for Lancester Royal Grammar School?

Good Luck on Oct 24.  For LRGS, it is a very good grammar school, i knew 2 boys from hk went to Cambridge & LSE.  As it is a boy school, my daughter could not apply.
作者: HKdevil    時間: 12-10-15 12:41     標題: 回覆:tsangdcf 的帖子

Lrgs is indeed good but i have two observations1 it is in north and a bit far from london2 the number of boarders two small, this provide few after school activities.

Sometime, it is not all about studies after all. I personally suggest people to choose those has at least two hundred boarders.

Tommy,

Interview is fine!
I sent email to interviewer after interview and just for thanks only.
Actually, before interview, i received a letter from admission registrar.
She said that they currently do not expect to be able to make offers into Year 10 in 2013.
However, she also said that it is possible that a vacancy might arise as they move through this academic year and so they will continue to process my son's application in the usual way.
In the meantime, the will write to school headteacher to request a boarding refererence on behalf of my son.
Hopefully, will get the X'mas gift from them.
God bless us!

The following schools have been admitted my daughter:

1. Dallam School
2. Shaftesbury School
3. Queen Elizabeth's Community College
4. Burford School

Which should I pick?

Most schools here are very good.  The teachers are really teaching and willing to answer questions!  The trible science lessons are taught in lab every lesson.  It makes the students more concentrated and understanding, especially to boys. I am sure all the students from HK will find themselves in paradise here!   The major problem for newcomers is English!

Hi tsangdcf,
If I were you, I would pick either Shaftesbury School (in Dorset) or Queen Elizabeth (in Devon, a bit far from London). As they are ranking 929 and 982 respectively.
Hence when location is a concern, I would pick Burford, ranking 1217, as it's located on Oxfordshire
that it's more favourable.
No need to consider Dallam, as the FT Ranking shows 1988, too low.
You may need to browse their schools' website in order to explore more about these schools.
Hope my little advice would help.
