Dear parents,
I wonder if K3 in international schools have any homework or lots of homework to bring home.
I do realize each school is different, but I do hear that for ESF students, most of their homeworks are completed in school.
My kid is in ISF K3 now, and I feel that he will have quite a number of homeworks each day starting this week.
Is that true with other international schools?
It seems to me ISF is like a modified local school.
Please comment.
Thank you.

you are right about ISF. My friends' kids there at Year 1 now. Last year at K3, they had lots of hw already, but they will have more in Year 1.
As far as I know, ESF K3 (their year 1) has no homework. Later, they will have some simple word cards to teach phonics and eventually some reading that the child needs to do at home, but it will all be very manageable (5 to 15 minutes a day)

ISF is 弘立書院. ESF is English Schools Foundation

elock> What did the teachers say during Back to School night? I forgot whether it was Back to School Night or during one of the reception for FY parents, but I remembered that the main objective for FY is to build a reading habit for the kids and that there are minimal homework. Assuming no change in the curriculum, there is only one Chinese and one English book report each week. To give the kids some flexibility and not feel burdened to do a report, there is flexibility built in so that they can choose to skip the report for a few weeks during the year. They do have to remember some 唐詩 and 弟子規 but those aren't really homework as the homeroom teacher would help them memorize in class. Can't really think of much work otherwise. Enjoy FY!

Not sure about this year, but for FY last year, really not much homework. Most of the work was done during school time.

I was informed that aside from books reading, the students need to write (such as journal). These are purely homework. That is they are to be done at home. I thought the kids will finish most of them in class, but I guess not. That is why I have an impression that ISF is actually a modified local school.

Hi elock
That's right. For Chinese language, there are book report and journal writing. Both are once per week. That's all. And the works will not be graded by the teachers (only comments e.g. 非常開心的活動耶!). The underlying rationale is just to motivate the kids to write some Chinese.
For English language, all writing are done at school. Only need to bring home weekly readers and sight word flash cards ... hence essentially similar to other international schools.
No Math homework in FY and G1.
Honestly, ISF put more effort on Chinese and maybe more effort is needed to learn Chinese. But in terms of homework, ISF is far far less than most local schools.
Relax and enjoy FY.

Oh yes, journal as well! But that is light, once a week. Enjoy the year. Just try to get your kid to read! The reading levels can be quite different within the class. And parents can borrow books from library too.

Even though it claims to be an independent school, it is categorized as international school by most of the people. Renaissance College is a private school too, but you will call it an IS too. It is just a name, and it isn't really bothered me. I am more concerned with the homework workload.
