標題: Anfield primary vs. Beacon Hill? [打印本頁]

My son is now in Y2 at Anfield. Beacon Hill called a few days ago about an opening. Suppose he can get in Beacon Hill, I am going to struggle whether to transfer him.

We like Anfield so far. As it is new and small, the kids get more attention and the school is trying very hard. Beacon Hill, on the other hand, is well-established and big. We really need to figure out which one is better for my boy, but it is not easy as both have its pros and cons. Thus I would appreciate any suggestions or comments.

My son is a shy boy and usually shuts down in front of strangers. He's smart and a good student though. Also he's a natural athlete.

What is your plan for secondary school?

Beacon Hill > KGV which is a dream school for so many ppl.

Anfield Primary > unknown, right?!

Here is some information on BHS for you to consider:

1) It is IB qualified, so they are running the Primary Year Program (PYP) as the currriculum

2) For Year 2, 3 days of Madarin Class a week. each day one session of 45 minutes

3) Each class is 30 students. no more, no less.

4) There are 3 classes for each year from Y1 to Y6

5) For Year 2, each class has a teacher, and a teaching assistant.

6) Class population is quite mixed, Chinese, europeans, south Asians, Americans....

7) for Middle, school, mainly go to KGV and Shatin College.

Best wishes for your decision making process.  It is tough.

Radiomama and Fatrara, thanks a lot for your reply.

1. We expect to take him back to the US for middle/high school education. However, there are uncertainties. So we may or may not stay for middle school.
2. 3 classes per week for Madarin seems too few. Anfield has it for everyday, though I know that's not enough either.
3. 30 is the number that concerns me. It seems too many for me, comparing to 21 at Anfield.
4. How are the teachers at Beacon Hill? I heard some not-so-nice stories about ESF teachers in general.

Thanks again for your help.

gwaichuchu, I think my son has learned a lot in the past year. I like they have homework for four days - of course just a little bit, but it's good reason to sit the kid down and discuss English, math and other subjects with him. Also based on the in-class exercise books we collected at the end of the year, I would say they learned a lot in class. Hope this helps.

Thanks EthanRyanMM. My son is exactly like yours, shy, shut down and freezed in front of large group and strangers. That's why I am not too positive he an get into any ESF or PIS.

Hi guys, I am back to update. My boy started his first week at Beacon Hill and he seems to like it already.
And gwaichuchu, I think there's still chance given different schools and interviewers. When my boy interviewed at Beacon Hill, he still didn't talk. But the principal and the teachers somehow were convinced that he would be a good student. They eventually took him.
Also I do think Anfield is a good school. I believe most teachers and staff are putting their heart into the school and children. For young children, loving and caring teachers are far more important than anything else. So our choice was actually a painful one.
Good luck.

Hi, how long did it take you to get a spot at bhs? Kindly share with me his application process, thanks.
作者: EthanRyanmm    時間: 12-9-19 14:20

We waited for about a year. We sent in our application last year through the ESF central online application system. Our address falls in the catchment area of BHS so he was put on the waiting list. We didn't do much last year, maybe one or two phone calls and were told no vacancies. So we were very surprised when they called to arrange an interview after the semester started. That's the whole story.
I guess it's all about luck and students in any international schools may just come and go and you never know what would happen at some point.
