dear mum:
究竟 arrived in /arrived at 的分別
一般理解 arrived in~大地方
arrived at~小地方
問題: I have planned to arrived _____ Hong Kong on 25-2-2012.
小兒答 in 但答案是at....我不明白請英文好的mum幫手(詳细點)....thanks

Though I have to use English a lot in my company (most of my colleagues are westerners or those ABCs and BBCs), i found that my English is getting worse and worse when my kid started his primary school. Now, like my colleague said, I am re-learning. I always ask my colleagues a lot of simple questions (even ask those westerners), they also dare not answer me!!! Same to learning Chinese. I am now learning with my kid together.

When you arrive at a place, you come to it at the end of a journey.
e.g. He arrived at Hong Kong this morning from Canada.

When you arrive at a place, you come to it for the first time in order to stay or live there.
e.g. One thing you need to do once you arrive in Hong Kong is to apply for a Hong Kong identity card.

介系詞「in」與「at」表示位置或方向時之應用分別？

in多是用於『大地方』大都市、國家等名詞之前；
at "       『小地方』家、市鎮、鄉村…                就如Kiukiu的示文。

補充的是：
We use "at" before "Hong Kong" to show where the place is regarded as a point on a route. （路線其中之一站）
The word "planned" written shows us what the hint is, doesn't it?

There's a useful rule between IN & AT in addition.  If the place is regarded as institutions, such as a univerity to be placed the prep "at" in front of it we have to memorize.
e.g.  Mary is studying at Sanford studying civil engineering. (places as institutions)

But where that same place is thought of in terms of residence, we use "in" as the prep on a sentence instead.
e.g.  Mary had lived in Sanford for 5 years.  (places as residence)

this is a preposition. It usually come with "arrive at " a place. We normally use "at" when the name of a city stands for a station, airport, a meeting place that is familiar to all speakers in the conversation.

'I have planned to arrived' 應改為 I have planned to arrive', 亦幫你double check 左 Oxford Practical English Usage (I use it as a grammar dictionary):

I have planned to arrive in Hong Kong on 25-2-2012.

Agreed.

According to "A Practical English Grammar", Oxford, and Collins Cobuild English Usage:

* arrive at a place like a station/airport/hotel
* arrive in a country or a city
