My son is studying F.5 for DSE syllabus.  He got scared by the liberal studies and he decided  to go aboard for studying in UK for Sixth Form in the coming September.  He plans to study civil engineering in an UK university afterwards.

I have started approaching an agent mid April. The agent made an initial written assessment test of their own (in Maths and English), and then they selected some schools for consideration. They also said the tests my son had undergone would also be sent to these selected schools together with the applications. I do not have much say on  the schools they selected as I have no idea about them. Also they said I was so late that many good schools had already full.

However, amongst those applied, one of them (Monmouth) repsonsed that it is full, so far TWO
(i) Bedford School
(ii)  Berhamsted Collegiate
replied that they would put my son on their waiting lists. How is the chance? Much hope or no hope? Can any one give me information on these?  Any of you have the experience of being waitlisted? Please share. How long normally I could get an answer for their final decision? Are these schools good too?

Some more questions:

My son was asked to give registration fee of 160 pounds for a school named Gresham's School in Norfolk and two tests on English and Maths had been taken. My son said he is quite confident with the test results. The decision for acceptance into the school is not yet known.  Is this a good school ? I would like to have your advice too should I pay the retention money if finally they offer a place to my son.

Furthermore, the King's Bruton School in Somerset has offered a place for my son upon application, No test was required. But I need to pay 100 pounds for the registration and also 2000 pounds for the retention before end of May 2012.  Is this school Ok? What is your comments on this school? Should I register and pay the retention money?

Bedford School 係間好學校，我suggest你叫你仔仔考多幾間做個後備都好。
唔知你仔仔成績好唔好？簡學校我SUGGEST你睇左佢地考A-LEVEL既A有幾多%同埋A-B有幾多%，當然最好唔好簡LONDON附近既SCHOOL，最後睇RANKING!
我諗你仔仔應該都係過去讀AL先嫁喇，King’s Bruton School我覺得都…應該唔太差…
Financial Times 英國私立院校排名　265
英國高考 A*-B%　　87.38%
英國會考 A*/A%　　44.96%
不過最好簡第2間好d

Thanks for your answer, I just wonder why you say it is not prefeerable to get those school near London. Why?

The Grade 11 igcse results will be announced in late Aug 2012 and by then the waiting list offer will be confirmed for Grade 12.

If you pay 2,000 pounds deposits to King's, you will held liable for the remaining 7,000 pounds school fees even you subsequently withdraw from King's with less than one term's notice.

You may start a new thread on your mentioned schools at UK website www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary to seek UK parents' advice on schools' learning atmosphere, pastal care etc.

Bedford School and Gresham's School are good schools and you should be proud of your son.
I personally know nothing about the other two schools you mentioned here.
If a school accepts any applicant without competitive selection, what do you expect from that school?
It is prudent to do more due diligence before you pay any substantial amount.

firstly, you know that, London is a wonderful city, there're lots of things that can attract your son, such as clubs, bars, whatever. If your son are not very mature, i suggest that he shouldn't study near london. If your son study near London, he may always go there even though he needs to take 1 hour/2 hours train to go there.(you know, all the teenagers are very very curious. Also, London has lots of "Chinese", there're rich and i think there not really want to study, they just want to play and i've heard some ppl said that they'll give some money to their friends and go to play together! I think it's not good for your son. Finally, i think London has a high expend, so i don't prefer your son study near London. It's just my suggestion and i heard these from my friend who studying in England. I don't know cause i'm going to England study A-Level this September.

Thank you for your reminder. I check with the education agency and they say your words are true. They excused that since I have not paid the deposit money, so they ;forget' to remind me.

Another thing, I just don't understand what do you mean by 'the igcse result for Grade 11 announce wil be announced in Aug 2012, and the wait list will be confirmed for Grade 12". What is relevance with my son's case. Can you explain in more details? Is that you mean my son will have no chance or very very slim chance to get the seat, or he can only get the confirmation as late as late August? So what is the suggestion from you? Thank you.

Personally I think that your son still has chance and would be eventually admitted by either school.

In UK, most Form 6 offers are conditional offers. Students have to satisfy the prescribed GCSE results before they get admitted or promoted to F.6. The IGCSE results will be announced on 23 Aug 2012. By then, I trust that some students might transfer to other schools or quit from present school. So your son will know whether he is successful in getting the waiting list offer after 23.8.12 the latest.

In the meantime, you may apply to more schools or consider the foundation course for your son.

my son is also studying F5 now and want to be a engineer in the future. The school called 'Louborogh Grammar School' verablly accepted him to study Year 12 in 2013. Is it a good school?

Civil Engineering has very good future (in HK) for the coming 10 years. I graduated from a school with very strong Civil Engineering. Make sure your son select and study good maths there. Be preapred well for this professional. Good luck.

阿仔的同學所入讀的學校如Tonbridge，Harrow，Winchester，Charterhose，Brighton，Abingdon，Oundle等都是英國好好的寄宿學校。

Why not consider the ranking website compiled by non-profit making and non educational oriented institutions such as ft or BBC which is more objective?

I find it interesting to find that school such as Shrewsbury ranks 15 in the best-school website but ranks 217 in ft website.

Last year, Loughborough required candidate to sit for entrance exam for only two papers: Maths (1 hr 15 mins) and English (1 hr 15 mins) without science subject paper and interview.

Anyway, The school informed that my son need to sit in the admission test in HK Britich Council althought which is arranged by the school. Which class is your son going to? Mine will be enter the Year 12 in 2013.

Loughbourgh is not the target school for my son though it's ranking is good and school fee is comparatively low.

My son's classmate is studying Grade 11 in this school but his mother reveals very little information on this school.

Applying this school through agent can save you the exam audition fee of about 2k charging by British Council.

Grade 12 entrance exam may be different from lower forms.

Some schools might only require school confidential report without exam for Grade 12 application. For lower forms, most schools require science paper or reasoning papers apart from Maths and English.

You may consider approaching academic Asia, Cooper and Cooper,etc to obtain more details.

Thanks CPU1995. Academic Asia has not much information regarding Loughbourgh. They said that very few students enter into this school through them.

Do you have any information regarding entrance exam of Loughbourgh? I plan to make application by early July.

Which is the target school for your son and in which grade?

Hi C.Chiu, the school did highly recommend Academic Asia to me.. I didn't make any official application and I didn't locate the agent yet. But it will work on it in July after my son completed his school exam.

Agree that at the school didn't much updated information on its new....the reason I I choose this school is because of its lower fee and it's ranking as well.

I did read the UK Inspection report for this boaridng school - overall is good but not excellent. there is few areas need to be improved in order to the the national minimum standards. i.e. quality and choice of meal / the medicication keep by the boarder / the old facilities in the boarding house etc...

I have no idea on the exam syllabus of loughborough.

Some schools have detailed entrance exam syllabus such as www.Tonbridge-school.co.uk/admission/introduction/ listing out the syllabus of entrance exam subjects.

My son is going to study Grade 12 in a boarding school with ranking below 20 in the coming Sept though I have not yet made up my mind on the offers on hand.

Loughbourgh Gramma School has verbally made offer to your son.  Have your son taken entrance exam?  If yes, would you mind giving some information regarding the exam?  Is your son currently studying F4 or F5?

C chiu, you mentioned that you son is in in F4 and he will going to study Year 12 (= F6)  in 2013. Do you think he can jump to it as Year 12 = A level syllbus...

C. Chiu, sorry for my confusion. My son will repeat F6 (A level) in Sep13-Jul14 in UK in order to familiar the environoment and the English standards. So we might be the classmate if we can enter into the same school.

The school did read my son's school report and replied us that they would be happy to accept us if we pick his school and asked us to attend the entrance test in HK.. Since this school is one of my target school only...I am not sure whether the one (one of our target school) will accept us. If the other one accept us, then we will not take the Loughborough as standby.

I think my son's school result met the school's standard, so they accept us. Alos, attend the entrance test is a much so that they can know his level of standard.

要留意Lourghborough 同Warwick同London Freeman是宿位少的boarding schools，香港每年都收10個8個，基本上所有宿位都是近99.9%Chinese，放學後是講廣東話，但好處是學費平。
