Can anyone share the comments on both schools please?  Is it very easy to get in Harrow?

作者: mrshoho    時間: 12-4-25 23:34

I would say no school is easy to get if you are going through the normal procedure... unless you have connections!!!

my kid is lucky enough to get offers from esf primary and harrow..it was a tough decision to be made... but we ended up choosing esf because of its established track record... hope my choice is right.

Depends on what you are looking for.  Harrow in Hong Kong is not the same as Harrow in the UK.  Your kids will mostly be friend with the wealthy Mainland students.  They just hired the Chief Executive from the ESF.  At the ESF school my kid is attending, the overall percentage of English, Australian, Americans and Canadians and other Europeans countries are over 70 percent.  In school, kids learn from each other.  Don't be fool by the name alone.  Just consider that as a franchise store of the original one!

Onsen: Can you please tell us what role will the Chief Executive from the ESF be taking at Harrow International? I heard that Harrow International already has a Head Master-elect who is presently Deputy Head Master of Harrow, UK.

HEAD MASTER
Mel Mrowiec (Christ Church, Oxford) from Harrow School, England

It appears that Harrow International has an impressive list of staff. How does this list compare to the ESF's staff list?

If I have the money and distance is not a concern, I will go for Harrow HK.  Heard that Harrow HK is not allowed to admit Mainland students.  They should go to Harrow Beijing.

I've heard that chance for getting in Harrow UK is very very slim - only a few boys from HK every year - little hope then.

ESF - a good choice for money saving.

I'm afraid you are wrong,my neighbourhood's kid will enter Harrow kinder in coming September, they are both from Mainland.

Heard that a lot of local parents not going for Harrow even though they have offer.
Secondly what would you value more, IB vs traditional UK curriculum?
And the quality of teaching staff, at ESF just depend on your luck to have good teacher in your class.

Correct me if I am wrong. Harrow HK admits students from the Mainland, if they are HK ID card holders (permitted to stay in HK but they may not have the permanent residency status). Their parents come to HK under work visa or investment scheme. Harrow Beijing cannot admit Mainland students unless they hold a foreign passport (because of the Mainland government policy).

I believe the policy remains the same asbefore: Chinese residents of the Mainland and Taiwan can only be admitted todegree programmes but not to primary or secondary schools.  See

Sorry for being discouraging but I amafraid that the notion that Harrow is a placefor networking with wealthy families from the Mainland is perhaps nothing morethan fantasy.  Those who can go to Harrow(HK) can go to any international schools in HK, such as CIS, HKIS, GSIS, etc.  Those who cannot go to other internationalschools in HK cannot go to Harrow (HK), but when reach the age for year 9, goto Harrow (UK), Eton, Westminster,...

Harrow (HK) has not been granted anyexemption.  In contrast, the restrictionthat she could not admit more than 50% local passport holders has not been imposedon any other schools.

I attended a briefing session for confirmedfamilies, and found that about half of the attendees were Caucasians whilst theother half were Asians.  Wealthy ornot?  I could not tell and nobody cared; weonly cared about the curriculum, the experience of the teaching staff and theschool life.

Those wealthy mainland kids are simply classified the local group so long as they have HKSAR ID and passport, so how many are from real local family in the 50 % bucket?

Whenever a person is holding a local passport, he is a local person.  Being a local person, he is eligible to apply to any schools.  If he doesn't speak Cantonese but does speak English as an alternative language, then he can enjoy a higher priority than Cantonese speaking children, when applying to ESF.  (Of course, this is just a stated policy; I am aware of the hearsay that for some ESF schools, some unlucky Category 1 applicants may not be interviewed at all.)  However, when applying to Harrow, a local person, no matter what languages he speaks, will suffer from this 50% cap. Being a child of a wealthy family or not is, I believe, irrelevant.

It would be hard for me to imagine that wealthy families living at the Peak, Repulse Bay, South Bay etc will give up GSIS, HKIS, CIS nearby and send their children to a school at Tuen Mun.

The couple I met in the car park after the briefing session drove a compact Mazda.  Well, perhaps because I, as well as those whom I had a conversation with, showed interest only in our children’s education, and so all of them seemed ordinary.  So, you met some wealthy and blue-blooded families?

Sorry, in fact I am not so sure if I understood the concerns you were trying to raise.

I just met a new neighbourhood who move from SE asia to live in Gold Coast area as they want their daughter to study in Harrow. And when chatted with them, the availability of boarding house in Harrow is one of the reason they choose Harrow.
