my child has just completed the Parsons children Piano class. I have to decide now what musical instruments for him to learn. The teacher said he is not that interested in Piano, but more like those percussion types.

Can anyone share some info on learning percussion?

- is it not that difficult to learn compared with other instruments?
- is it easier to pass the graded examinations?
- is it OK to learn just this instruments without learning piano or others simultanously, in terms of future development?
- any good centre recommended for learning percussion?

Please give some advice.

初學係，但之後用3 mallets, 4mallets 都難，打marimba 又要著重音色，另多數不會只學tuned percussion, 會學埋snare drum，snare drum 的drum roll 也要練習

其實只要肯練，任何樂器都唔難pass
- is it OK to learn just this instruments without learning piano or others simultanously, in terms of future development?
我覺得只學percussion都ok
- any good centre recommended for learning percussion?

Hi marcuscyrus,
My kid has learnt for months and we want to get one set percussion kit at home for practice, Jupitxx PK3216 or 3218 with X stand u would recommend? And Yamaxx drum stick Y01-ME102 or 103 better?

我兒用的是3216, 雖然組裝麻煩一些，但因當年弟弟還只是toddler，怕用3218會不穩，如我沒記錯，兩型號的分別只在於腳架，drum pad和xylohphone 是一樣的，3216平一點點
3216和3218都已配有mallet，但我們沒用，超吵的
平常在家用的是me102(黃色)，兒子說me102 較響，me103(橙色)較soft，如果用來打kit 的xylophone，老師提議用me102

Learning percussion is fun and the start might be easier than some other instruments. And you won't just learn 木琴 but other percussion instruments.

I help training in a percussion band in the past and the children with music background might learn it faster. However, it isn't a must.

You need to prepare the venue for exam and pick the examiner up. It is different from taking piano or violin exam.

thanks for your advice. I am thinking may be learning in Parsons or Tom Lee. Because they have more centers and closer to my home. Then I think the learning center will be the exam centre also.

tom lee的percussion課應該不是每間分行也有，最好先打去問問

不過現在 percussion 人教埋非洲鼓果D 一班20人... 佢地收6 7百一小時又唔洗點跟考試

我仔學o個度d 老師都係只教返snare drum同tuned percussion
btw，你會唔會識人會放2手marimba?

In the beginning, maybe it is wiser to learn in a group and see your kid's attitude and interests towards it. :)
