Hi SCKnight,

Glad to see your reply, and appreciate your always support on giving valuable advice to new SC parents!!!

I heard SC teaches students on her own phonics system (not Jolly, not Lettlerland) starting from K2.  Do you think K2 is a bit late?  Does your kid attend outside phonics as well, or just follow school's teaching and do revision at home?  Thanks for your sharing again!!!

SC teach phonics in K1, - letter sounds. But in K2, they do the revision once again.

bb@wonderland,

Thanks for your reply and glad to know there is phonics from K1.

In your opinion, is it enough if we just follow school's teaching?  My boy will attend K1 in the coming Sep and I'm wondering whether to let him attend some phonics course now.  Do you think this can help to better prepare or it will make him confuse?  Thanks!!!

Hi applered525,

I just share my 2 cents with SC parents and wish the humble opinion could able giving some help.

Yeap.  Like bb@wonderland mentioned SC has developed its Phonics system, and they started teaching in K1.

We wish our kid can has better pronounciation.  But we've found the NET contact hours in K2 will be sharply reduced (due to the increase of class size and NET teacher need to take care 2 classes), and we are not native English speakers. I let him study Letterland phonics when he was studying in K1 2nd term.

Another reason why I let my kid learns Letterland is SC only provide a CD and some exercise books for me to teach him phonics. But the materials are in B&W and with no guidance on how parents do the English phonics revision with their children.  I started shop around to see what materials are available in the market.  I've found Letterland materials are quite comprehensive and with materials for both kids and parents.

Before enrolled Letterland, I bought the Letterland ABC and its CD.  When I started playing the CD, my kid fell in love with the 26 letterland characters.  Then I started use Letterland to do Phonics revision with him.  My bank a/c started bleeding.....

May be my kid is a little bit slow in learning (some kids' parents share their kids can master blending within 1 year), he only able to master the blending and all sounds well in Christmas last year.  But fortunately, the investment started payback this year, my kid know how to do blending and able to dictate the vocabulary based on phonics has learnt in the last 2 years.  His NET is also pleased to his English performance in class.  (Be frank, I did think of stop let him learning phonics when he only got 2 out of 5 shields in Cambridge Starter spelling last year.)   If everything goes smoothly, he should able to complete the phonics class by this year end.

Shared with SCKnight, if you would like your kid to have a comprehensive learning in the Phonics system. You can enroll Letterland Phonics or Jolly Phonics.
I also bought the Letterland materials, there are teaching guides, so an alternative, you can teach your kid at home without enrolling the courses.

Hi SCKnight and bb@wonderland, if we enroll classes of Letterland or Jolly Phonics, will the children feel confused ?

I am not sure for Jolly Phoincs. For Letterland, the sounds taught, are mostly in line with SC.

My son didn't feel confused, and his NET teachers have commented he has good English pronounciation.

My kid and I are 2 small potatoes in SC.  In SC you will find more capable parents and talented kids.  Hope you and you child enjoy the study in next few years.
