Dear kc1016,

I have written some sharing with other about self-spinning. Hope it be meaningful to u.

(Need to identify each separately.
First, in development delay side, self-spinning is a kind of stimming, a self-stimulating behavior.

Most common suspect is that self-spinning referring to an irregular sensory development, particular somatic本體感 and frontal前庭感sensory deficiency of  a kid. Through such behavior, he/she will gain back the satisfaction which they are lacking of.

In long run, the best suggestion is getting a remedy on his irregular part of sensory - sensory training, medication, acupuncture, craniosacral ???
In medium term, playing trampoline, swings, tight tunnels, brushing body, doing yoga or even buying her/him some mirror will also help.
In immediate moment, best idea of course is to hug him gently since hug is giving a kid the best somatic satisfaction if he likes after stopped him from self-spinning.
For non-developmental part, he might be bored, u might get him a play or a task to complete to stop him self-spinning.)

Eye-playing and eye-spinning might mean there is a visual integration deficiency, more often being under active than over-active of visual image. Please note that a delayed kid more likely to have the sensory information processing problem rather than they have problem over their sensory devices. Taking eye-playing and eye-spinning as an example, it might not mean your kid did not see things clearly. It rather relates to the brain could not process the meaning of the visual data (as what he saw) properly. When a person see a thing through their eyes, the visual data will project into retina視網膜. Light data will become neurotic information transferring from the eye through our nerve in form of electric current by some chemical substance named neurotransmitters神經傳導物質into the brain. In general, most visual data will be centralized in thalamus丘腦first and are then being processed in the occipital lobe 枕葉
with help of parietal lobe
頂葉. After data processed, decision and expression made through our frontal lope額葉if reaction is necessary.

Many delayed kids are having irregular development in the composition of neurotransmitters, thalamus and different lobes. Data are then not being processed properly. Therefore, irregular behavior might occur. Or the brain will devote a person to do such kind of behavior to seek for abundant visual satisfaction in compensation of improper/inadequate data receiving or processing. The frequency of eye-playing and spinning is also crucial. Occasional eye-playing and/or eye-spinning did not mean your kid having a skewed development in the brain. Many non-delayed kids or even juveniles did so. At last, you probably need a brain scanning to find out which part being skewed.

The most popular behavioral method to rectify eye-playing is of course supplementing - just diverting your kid to play other things. Keep him/her busy on other activity. You might also find him/her some eye exercise or brain gym to help him/her to have better processing flow of visual information. Other method like medication or treatment might also be helpful to bring your kid more easily processing visual information instead of seeking extra stimulus through eye-playing or eye-spinning.

Hope my sharing being helpful to you.

Dear kc1016,

I am sorry to forget to say 2 more things.

1. Self-spinning, eye-playing, eye=spinning, even spinning wheeling, screaming, playing doors/drawers, throwing things out of window, etc, if your kid did not USUALLY or obsessed to do so, it is ok to allow him/her to do so sometimes or even reserved him/her to do so in a regular time. Pls remember allowing him/her to have some private time to do whatever he /she wants is more important to rectify all yr kid's behavour. I 100% guarantee it will create LESS behavoral problem than not allowing to do anything upon the expectation of the society or so-called professionals. Important keys are Safe, Not obsessed, Not affect others/or environment.
2. All these behavoral problems such as self-spinning, eye-playing, eye-spinning, even spinning wheeling, screaming, playing doors/drawers, throwing things out of window, etc mean they are AN INDICATOR of a problem of the brain development or child development on the whole rather than being a problem of itself unless the important keys mentioned before are broke (Such as hurting himself or others, etc) I subjectively think Long term focus of a parent is to help your kid to rectify the problem of the development rather than stopping him to behave upon the expectation of the society...

Hope this being meaningful.
