As DBS running IB for 3 years, should be more students and parents want to know the status.

Also hearing diff problems of 334, it's a good opportunities for boys to study in DBS IB stream.

If English is excellent, easier than G1 and G7 admission.

Just talked to a friend and his son is my son's senior, he got 2 offers from CUHK, one from HKU and HKUST respectively. He holds 2 offers and declined 2.

In the main round, more students got offers from Ivy League like Princeton....

Leo should update the offer list sooner.
Amazing, some boys got conditional offers = "unconditional offers", like IBDP + English SL 5 for hot programs....

Keep the run next year too.

Hi all , any comment about IB or preIB run by SPCC ? As they don't have any admission talk, not sure are they doing 'real IB' ? ( I know it is an excellent school in traditional system)  I mean their approach, system and teacher's mindset !  As I know their teachers are mainly the original teachers there and the co-ordinator is a local lady!
From Mr.ANChan,  DBS sounds different!
Just see if any parent got any idea or know someone studying there can share!

Mr. ANChan, from  other threads,  most IS schools need a few years to adjust from IGCSE to IB, what do you think about DBS or SPCC?

Hi all , any comment about IB or preIB run by SPCC ? As they don't have any admission talk, not sure ...
All the teachers at SPCC IB are 'original' staff that come from the local division in the past. Not sure about the IB1s but the pre-IB has been running quite successfully...I mean 'quite'. Actually something special is that SPCC students are getting 5s and 6s in the majority in their pre-IB year as opposed to in DBS where 7s are given out quite easily in the pre-IB year. That may actually be the accurate representation and expectation of the student in the IBDP programme more.
I am afraid of giving biased opinion but what I heard is that the subject choices are narrower than DBS. Their choices made before the pre-IB year (in Year 9) are very 'final' since DBS pre-IB offers seven subjects (reduced to six for IBDP) but SPCC pre-IB does not do so and only offers six subjects (so e.g. Phy Chem History and that's it, the student has to carry this option to the end of the IBDP ultimately). As for DBS the featuring of 2 sciences and 2 humanities subjects lets the students explore more on different subjects and make the right choice in the end, in my humble opinion.
IGCSE is a different level from IB...do you mean GCE? Since a lot of students start doing the IBDP immediately after their IGCSEs. Anyway, DBS and SPCC does not teach or encourage the IGCSE yet they allow students to have the option to enrol in IGCSE examinations on behalf of the school. As for the 'transition' between local curriculum and IBDP curriculum, that is the key purpose of setting up the pre-IB year.

Not sure for SPCC, but in DBS it is quite effective since students are taught about the skills rather than the knowledge for preparation of doing the IB (for example how to do the internal assessments efficiently and correctly, e.g. Maths and Physics; or simply extending the two-year course into three-year for better adaptability for students, e.g. English Literature and Psychology). The provision of the pre-IB year is more than enough for equipping the students in both schools to accomplish with flying colours in the IBDP I'd say.

*************************************************

Most ESF and some IS had IGCSE and GCEAL before adopting IB, so IGCSE and then IB quite a natural and reasonable approach. For DBS and SPCC adopt Pre-IB to have a smooth transition from local to IB curriculum. Since, we can't see the first batch IB graduates from the said schools, I can't say which one is better.

For your last para, I would like to know why you said the DBS's Pre-IB and IB  ...
Actually it depends on the subject. For physics, extensive lab reports every week (6-8 hours to complete one on average) with very strict marking based on the different types of labs required by the IBO for physics IA. Of course they cover some concepts in the physics topics but main purpose is to train the students vigorously on how to do a proper, presentable lab. As for English and Chinese teachers try to cover as many aspects of the IB courses as possible - for example IOC, IOP, FOA, Papers 1 and 2, different texts study as a sampler...

Chemistry again just covering stuff taught in G9 - since most students come from 9D/9S they have no problem in knowledge therefore again numerous labs and lab reports following IB marking style in order to train students. Math not teaching the IB syllabus yet but instead make students familiarized with a different approach to mathematics compared to the local school (very rarely there are 'nice-looking' solutions in complex maths such as 1 etc but just 'ugly' answers, similar to UK/IB style) and also training for IA - short time to complete a massive project just like IB Maths SL and HL.

There are still some exceptions though, for example Econ and Psyc teaching parts of IB syllabus already in order to split the course from two-years into three-years so teaching is less quick paced and more thorough - but there is again also extensive training for the IA and exam response style for Econ and Psyc papers.

Thanks for your detail replies of my question. After your clarification, we are on the same page.
You have an assumption that all boys are competent to self-learning and acquire the knowledge by themselves. Build up from their knowledge base and enhance their learning, research and examination skills to achieve flying color examination results. Not undermine the importance of knowledge acquisition.

For clarification, in DBS Pre-IB used developing, meet requirement or exemplary for individual subject in the transcript with marks, no grading at all. in your description 7s, it sounds not my case  anyway.

Thanks webeheld and Anchan59 for your detail comments, could I ask if the schools IB co -ordinaries will discuss  the strategy of  university plan or in the aspect of how to choose IB subjects?
Could we compare the IBDP programs btw these two excellent schools with ESF schools ( cos they have few years experience in IB)

Thanks in advance!

For clarification, in DBS Pre-IB used developing, meet requirement or exemplary for individual subje ...

I believe this is not the case this year. Pre-IB Report is based on four grades: E P D B (Exemplary, Proficient, Developing, Beginner). Teachers have insisted that these four grades are a rough representation of 7654 in the IB, particularly for the E and P grades where boundaries have been set loosely based on the IBO newest grade boundaries. It can vary greatly, for example 2011-2012 mid-year Pre-IB Psychology only required 66% for an 'E', yet only less than five in the grade achieved such result; but 2011-2012 mid-year Pre-IB Chemistry which required 85%+ (actual figure unsure) for an 'E', more than half of the grade achieved such result. Some subjects combine both IA and examination result to give the grade of E/P/D/B, for example physics, while some subject teachers gave out these grades based on his/her individual prediction of student's future performance in IBDP.

I cannot give too detailed information on comparison with ESF schools, but as for university preparation in DBS:
In the student's Pre-IB year there is a subject named 'IB Skills' taught by the University Counsellor of the IB Department in DBS. There are two lessons per week and there is proper assessment. Components include training of university application as follows:

Citations
Academic Writing
Introduction to Universities and Courses
Mock SAT
Mock US Personal Statement
Mock UK Personal Statement
Mock UCAS
CV Preparation
Reference Letter

There is extensive training for the students in the aforementioned aspects so they are well-prepared for their subject choices (finalized by March in the pre-IB year) and am sure of which way to go after understanding the university requirements.

作者: kym    時間: 12-4-20 12:06

I think 38 with 766 for HLs is the standard offer, but I think one should at least get PG 40+ to be able to get a conditional offer.
作者: ANChan59    時間: 12-4-20 12:37     標題: 回覆:kym 的帖子

I don't think PG 40+ is realistic. The offer included bonus point so PG without bonus point 38 is reasonable, as the final grades around 40+ included bonus make more sense to me.

May be other parents can share their experience.
