when you hear a e i o u (just like the alphabet sound), it's a long vowel, e.g. over, apron, ice, university, easy

when you hear /ar/ /air/ /e/ /or/ /uh/ (I don't know how to type in the way easy to understand), it's a short vowel, e.g. apple, elephant, igloo, orange, umbrella

Hope it can help you!

There are many ways to spell both short vowels & long vowels.  I recommend that you memorize each rule and its spelling.  Absolutely it can enchance your spelling and reading activity.

Recommend you to look for and read the
books (1-4), printed in Taiwan  :-

《自然發音  VS. KK  音標》   In libraries

There is an agreement between the Stress and the Syllable, determining how to make a right sound of the word.
Its content will show you all the rules and useful
ways to pronounce words correctly.
May it help you ALL!
