My son is studying in py1 now.  Answers to your question:
1. SWCK
2. As far as I know, one of my son's classmate is from Victoria.
3. His english standard was ok to converse and to listen to instructions from teachers.
4. Since at the time of interview, parents are not allowed to accompany, you had better train your kid's independence in the sense that he won't cry while participating group activities with strangers.

thanks to your reply!

does the class in SWCK conducted in eng/PTH? if so, i think the little kids won't have problems in simply conversation after studying PN and K1.

for that kid from victoria, do you know if he's from local or international stream?

how old is your son when he has the interview at SIS? my kid is now 1.5 years and he's a little bit (?)  shy when facing strangers. he now can listen to very very simple intructions, but i don't think it's enough for the interview, as from other moms' words, during the interview, the teachers would tell a story and then ask the kids questions.

i'm now struggling if it's time to consider to change to international KG (e.g. tutor time) or just stay in victoria (if there is an offer), because i'm still not sure if targeted on IS is suitable for him or not!!

It is basically right for you to think & plan earlier about whether IS / Traditional Schools would suit your kid... For our case, I had been debating with my wife about the pros and cons of IS / traditional schools a few years before the birth of our son.

About your questions :

1) SWCK - 90% Eng, 10% PTH and they don't have PN, so starting from K1. Their Eng is so strong that the kids would see great improvement in a few months after starting their K1.  So, unless your kid is a native PTH speaker, parents would mostly choose the Eng interview in SIS, but not PTH.

2) I don't know much about the Victoria kid.  I just know she was from Vic / CWB.  Her Mom said many of the Vic K1 classmates applied but just a  few got accepted.

3) I think your kid is still too young to say if he/she is shy away from the crowds....just let him/her participate more in group activities would certainly help.  Consider those classes provided by Kids Gallery, which help a lot in kids growing more expressive and independent.

4) I must say that if you are a complete local HK (just like our case), i.e. not CAT 1 for ESF, non-Singaporean for SIS, it would run a certain risk if you commit your kid to IS totally, without reserving a choice for traditional / private schools.... because frankly, the competition for a space in a good IS - e.g. SIS, ESF, CDIS, CIS, HKIS, GSIS is very keen nowadays....

Meantime, while observing if your kid is suitable for which stream, I advise you to visit such IS when they are open for the public....say the coming Dec - there will be Christmas fair open for the public in SIS and I guess they will also hold "Open House" like the past 2 years in coming April 2012.   Visit their websites to k.i.v of their activities.

Relax and good luck!

ikerberg,

May I ask what are the full names of CDIS, CIS, HKIS & GSIS? I'm new to all these IS school discussions. Sorry to bother you !

HKIS - Hong Kong International School

Are you doing your interview anytime soon?

The new VP at SIS is very focused on English language skills.  If you get an invitation letter for interview, it allows you to choose either English or Mandarin.  However, as competition becomes more fierce, interviewers talk to kids in both English and Mandarin.  Questions related to story telling, time, basic math and singing are expected.  Hope it helps

回復 hofi 的帖子

以前面试的时候,考官只会跟你说你选择的语言,不知道什么时候开始变成了interviewers talk to kids in both English and Mandarin了呢?

如果SIS的政策仍未改变的话,那么我建议英语不强的家庭工是否可以改变策略,改选用普通话面试,首先竞争者不多,其二学校方面为了平衡中英文,也很乐意接收普通话表的流畅的孩子。

Yes you are correct that they let you choose either English or Mandarin for interview.  Say if your child have chosen English, the interviewer will still "drop" a few words in Mandarin just to "test" your child's ability - just because the bar is set high these days.

Even though your mother language is not English, I'd still recommend to conduct the interview in English.  SIS just has a new vice principal who is very focused on English.  Also, all classes except Chinese are taught in English.  If you choose to be interviewed in Mandarin, you are not necessarily in a better position.
