I find it hard to believe that they Hong Kong Government / official has a geniune interest to improve English language ability in Hong Kong when I see the English collection of junior Library.

I have been visiting the City Hall Library Junior section quite often  in recent months as my daughter started reading chapter books.

The collection of books there such as junior  fiction and the biography section in the public Libraries is quite appallingly old and worn out.

To me, it shows a  lack of investment in book funds and librarians who know children literature.

It makes one think that the intention to improve language ability is just a show or slogan.

THat's very true, and it applies not only to junior section , but also adult collection.

我又不覚得書旧有問題。　反而希望政府可以教育下、不可以在図書内図鴉、所有的英文書本、都被人写上中文解釈、差不多無一幸免。　応該是父母要教的一環、可能現在的新一代父母自己都係ＧＵＭ，唯有希望政府ＥＤＵＣＡＴＥ．

Agree, many books are very old. However, we can find some story books to read, especially Chinese story books. When my kid does project, we can always find reference books.
We will use this service as much as possible. This is the only government benefit I can enjoy.

這一代的小孩子曰常接觸到的其他媒體都很新奇吸引，我們要培養小孩子的讀書興趣及習慣就必定要有相當具吸引力的讀物，我們不但　要提供優秀的作者，精彩的故事更要有美妙的封面及插圖。只有這樣才能吸引小孩愛閱讀。

而香港公共圖書館說提倡小孩閱讀習慣，不能只有空談！要做就要由有改善書藏做起！

Hi Wootaitai,
My girl is 6. She recently finished the Magic Tree House Series. She is reading Junie B. Jones and the Rainbow Magic Series. She is a fast reader and I am trying to find a wider variety of books for her.

Recently, I found out from the web a few popular children author in US. I start looking for Beverly Clearly the other day. There werea two or three on the Junior Fiction shelves by Clearly but these books were bought in the 80's. One has date stamp going back that far. I borrowed them anyway but my girl showed very little interest in picking them up and read them. And we are talking about an avid, highly motivated young reader here!
I checked the catalogue for the same author and her books were scattered all over HK libraries. The same goes with very popular series by Enid Blyton - the Famous Five and The Secret Seven. Of the few times that I checked the shelves, they were mostly not there. The one or two that were there were worn and unapppealing to say the least.

I would guess that with the catchment of City Hall Library, a better stock of the Junior Fiction collection is warranted.

都要看看父母LOR.　　I－PHONE一出又買、有新COMPUTER　GAMES一出又買。　　書旧反而有FEEL.　　我最憎都係D書写到花NEE花LOOK,無D公徳心。

有本書The Incredible Journey, 好似是Canada作者、一D都不新、but still very readable!! Loads of examples around. 所以点解一定要新書？

HK public libraries are very willing to accept opinions from us. Years b4,I suggested few good books for them and they brought them very soon.
I encourage you to make positive suggestion to them. They are trying hard to serve the society.
