阿仔9月開學升P.6 , 我常常叫他多看英文書. 但是都是被拒絕. 在圖書館借了回家都是放在一邊. 他說內容有很多生字都是唔識, 我都試過和他一起看英文書, 但是他都是沒有心機 . 請問各位媽媽有沒有方法可提供給我呢 ?

平時放學后,時間都是不多了. 都是要做功課,溫習. 每星期都有一至二天去游水. 以前細時在睡前都仲有睇下中文圖書 , 但是現在都沒有了. 不過昨天開始叫佢睇返小小英語街 ( 學生報紙). 其實我都是想佢的英文程度脫離得太遠, 因為佢間學校的英文都是比同區淺.而且又上 P. 6 了. 又要煩升中的問題

I ususally do not suggest the bilingual story books but since your kid is now in P.6, you may try if it works. There are some published in Taiwan, e.g. Magic Tree House, available in public library.

老實講句，等到P6先黎培養閱讀英文的興趣，都真係算遲左D。
唔遲。我見過阿大阿二好多同學仔，中一時才看magic tree house，但一两年後已可看厚厚的英文書。
講到尾，能不能讀書，真係要睇小朋友之能力和毅力。我輩中人，甚至上一輩之左丁山等等，我唔信佢地比現在的小朋友讀更多英文課外書，但畢業後，絕大部分英文唔錯。
再者，唔看英文課外書都沒有甚麽大不了。我啲侄兒很少看英文課外書(佢地看嘅中文書都很有深度)。英文都唔差。大侄兒上大学時，初初不敢問問題，但現在已敢和講師討論。俾心機幾時都唔遲。

I think if the level is appropriate, it is not necessary to look up the dictionary whilst reading the books.
I agree that kids should learn how to look up words from dictionary. From my experience, they use it during writing rather than during reading.

其實佢以前都有看英文書, 只是隨年紀長大, 漸漸興趣減低了. 佢鐘意睇 J2 的 加菲貓 , 我有叫他睇的時候轉聽英文版 , 但是他都是說不好, 看了一會兒時就不停叫我轉回廣東話.

呢個係冇辦法解决嘅現象。我懷疑喜歡睇英文書嘅小朋友，好可能係中文唔掂之故。
我習慣每星期都同阿三去借書。初初，20本中大概只有3本中文，原因是既淺又有趣嘅中文書很少，阿三也只間中揭揭中文書而己。漸漸地，現在中文書己佔1/3，阿三也越來越愛睇中文書。
一般上，中文識幾千字已足夠用，英文却多多益善。你会發現很多中小學生很喜歡睇同一系列圖書，這除了追劇情外，詞彙相近也有關係。magic tree house呢套書真係唔錯，阿大、阿二細個有睇，阿三依家都睇。

是呀 , 阿仔是鍾意看中文書. 他有一套中文版的波斯傑克森, 他會看到津津入味.之前有呈分試就放低了一段時間.題外話 ,其實他的中文分是比英文低, 他測驗及考試一向英文分較高.所以我覺得佢都怪怪地 . 不過, 我又不是一定要他看英文課外書. 如他覺得不想 , 我首先不會強迫他. 以免起衝突. 再想下計仔.

Uncleedward used to say that as well.
The primary purpose the dictionary serves: to spoil the fun from reading.
The key to getting kids to read English books is the same as for reading Chinese books. Arouse the kid's interest and curiosity in the language by surrounding him/her with English books, TV, magazines/newspapers, English friends,...The important part and the difficult part is for the parents to show as examples themselves. If you just enjoy 八卦雜誌, you can't reasonably expect to train up your kid to become a serious philosopher by yourself, can you? The final chance then is left to his school/friends, in other words, his fate.

以下是我的起启示:
小女是双语人, 见人说人话, 见鬼说鬼话, 一般的自在. 她也有好些双语人朋友, 如广东+英语 或国语+英语, 然而她们交往时的语言是决定最初相识时所采语文. 例如先用英语交谈的, 日后是绝不会用广东话沟通的, 相反是讲开广东话的, 转台说英语便变得好奇怪了.
看书的情况也是一般, 睇开 J2 的 加菲貓中文版, 对用字, 名称好有感情, 转看英文版便不是味儿呢! 除非是为学英文而阅读, 像看教科书的心情求学问.
本人也曾经推荐女儿转台看相同系列的中文书, 结果是'她睬我都傻', 反之向她软硬兼施的推荐有趣的中文读物, 她还愿意试看,
请按你孩子爱好和英语程度为他選择合适的英文读物, 总会找到突破点. 加油!!!!

據我囡既經驗：有慣用語文既，遇到雙語書，通常只會睇慣用語。好似Magic Tree House咁，最初我囡唔肯睇英文，後來佢果班流行睇小天下套雙語版，佢就剩吓睇中文
不過，當佢搵唔到中文版，又想睇最新既故事發展時，都會勉為其難睇英文。
佢既經驗，都係睇開中文就唔會睇英文。睇英文，只係因為果D故事冇中文版，咁啱佢又有興趣（主要係包裝同插畫啱佢口胃），至睇。所以只會重重覆覆睇幾套
假如之前有睇開oxford reading tree既，新出咗stage 10同11都幾啱男仔睇，果套d圖都多，字比chapter bk少，故事有連貫，較易追成套。唔知我囡係唔係特別幼稚？書展時佢留響青田果度睇咗好多幼稚園程度既一至幾行一頁既oxford reading tree，都睇得津津有味。之前我睇都覺得OK吸引，可借黎試試，慢慢由green bk發現magic key開始追到主角們都大個咗既stage11
我囡同令公子一樣較愛看中文書，亦都係英文成績遠較中文好
，可能因為地區學校既英文淺好多？

另外睇電視劇集，等佢地先唔抗拒聽亦可能係一個辦法？
囡囡同佢有少少驚英文既同學響我屋企睇magic school bus時都會睇英文（唔係冇得睇），不過仍睇中文字幕。睇歌舞片要跟住唱，字幕就情願睇英文。
最近我睇Glee，內容可能啱大少少，囡囡呢個年齡正值道德委員會當然委員，就唔係好接受同性戀和未婚先孕等內容（我從來冇教這種歧視，個人亦不少同性戀者朋友，唔知點解佢咁傳統？）。網上睇既大陸翻譯版好犀利，竟然譯埋歌詞！呢套劇明珠台有播，九月上第三季，hit緊，內容第一二季都幾OK，宣揚中學生接受和面對真我，歌又好聽。如令小朋友對其中歌曲有興趣，要找來唱，大概已成功？

有无看过horrible science by Nick Arnold, 似乎horrible science 比 horrible history 受欢迎. 我猜测欧美历史不一定是孩子的那杯茶.

小女小时忙着到处playdates, 现在忙住各类运动和比赛, 也不是经常有时间去书店和图书馆的.
我唯有查看多类型好书, 好题材,投其所好, 選些合适的读物, 从图书馆借回来个她選看, 日子有功, 便把握孩子的读物和品味了.
开始时可以先借阅简单的picture books, 那怕是你辛苦借来二十本, 他只看一本, 已是很成功了. 然后再重新借二十本, 让他選读. 可以跟孩子约法三章, 例如每三天看一本浅显易懂的英文书, 不要多, 不要深. 要持之以恒, 如是者九个月后, 必有惊喜!
六年级才开始是多点难度, 因为我们再不能跟孩子随便说: I say it. 但事在人为, 永不会迟, 今天我们不做领航员, 难度要等孩子二十岁才后悔吗?
坐言起行, 加油啊!!!!!

数星期前有家长提及 an award-winning teacher, Ron Clark, 我马上订阅他的著作, The Essential 55 rules, 这书内容简单易懂, 非常实用. 在这里特别感谢那位家长. 本人极度推荐此书给家有八岁以下孩子的家长阅读.
老友家教好, 孩子们非常出色, 只要是interview, 便无往不利, 我看了这书开始的十个rules, 便惊觉老友的孩子早已把头五个rules学懂了. 怪不得如此受成人专重和爱抚.
小女是teenager, 有些习惯和态度已成型, 要花更多力气改善之. 希望大家阅读时也思考如何把人生的1st greatness 送给儿女.

其實這 55 Rules, 大人學懂了也有得益。

我早排睇過此書既中譯本，都有同阿囡提過。不過，五十五條太多，我自己都睇唔晒，亦記唔晒
。簡單既規條，最多三幾條就夠了。太多不易實踐。（我鍾意佐賀阿嬤既規條多D ）
睇咗本書之後，都有提自己同人講多謝既時候望住為你服務既人，結果係：同我一齊既阿囡多咗跟我講，雖然未必次次望住人
我倒很喜歡書中既教育例子，如登廣告提問，令到克林頓夫婦接見佢地果單，就充分顯示出沒有特定授課內容既好處
。不過，彈性亦有彈性的危險，這會令想偷懶既老師可以好hea

Hi Christi,
You can borrow it from Central Library before shopping a copy. In the beginning I would love to buy several copies for friends who have infants and toddlers. After finishing the reading I notice the 1st 11th rules would fit for family and social manner while the balance rules are more appropriate to follow in school. As same as csy_ma's recommendation that not all rules are practical indeed.
The book is short with 196 pages, it could be not worth to pay approx HK$180.- to buy it via website. (including mailing)
Anyway, the 1st 11th rules are brilliant already. If I have a girl having such beautiful and polite manner, how could other adults not give her the best chance and guidance. I believe once those kids can master these basic rules smoothly, they would have be guaranteed to reach the very bright and happy future.

1. Respond to an adult when spoken to.
2. Make eye contact when spoken to.
3. Congratulate classmates.
4. Respect other students’ comments, opinions, and ideas.

6. If you are asked a question in conversation, ask a question in return.
7. Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough and say excuse me.
