Does this system apply for P1 students? After all, they have not chosen or been assigned extracurricular activities yet.

According to my observation, P.1 should be on random basis and the allocation mentioned by Mrs Lam seems to be applied in P.2 or above.

Is it a good idea to group the P1 kids according to which kinder they come from? (or similarly styled kinder?) This may help the kids to adopt to the new environment more easily?
Don't underestimate children's ability to adapt. My son had only 7 K2 classmates in his K3 class or 31 children; within a month or two, he had already got used to the environment.
I believe children should mingle more instead of staying with the same children year after year to enhance their ability to adapt to new environment. They have an orientation classes for 3 days before the school year begins to help the children get used to the new environment.

That is also true. What I am thinking is even you group the same kinder kids to the same class you will at most have a few kinder classmates that you recognised (e.g. even if you have like 20-30 from St Catherine intake they are from many different classes). So you still will meet many new kids.
And I think first year in a Primary is quite different from the same Kinder you have been studying for 2 years, thats why even though I agreed there should not be a real adaption problem it would help the kid to do better.
And I think it is still better than just group them randomly.
