Supposing your kids are pre-schoolers (i.e. under 6 years of age), I would recommend phonics.

Phonetics helps one to know the pronunciation of a word by looking it up in the dictionary (while one must have the prior knowledge of the phonetic symbols). It has the advantage of correcting the common mistakes of pronunciation (e.g. Cambridge, plumber, mosquito, etc) which general phonic skills can't give a clue.

我諗要睇下你小朋友幾大啦, 起步時我諗phonics會易d 掌握, 而且會有d 串字概念, 家長見到小朋友識串字可能會好開心, 因為佢又會拼音, 讀到d字出黎, 但我個人認為phonics 長遠黎講唔係正統囉, 佢啱d 以英語為母語o既小朋友多過我地咖‧
自己認為如果我比我小朋友會教佢phonetics + ipa instead of phonics, 識串字唔代表英文叻, phonics 教o既rule唔係100% 準確, 自己讀書果陣都會came across一d 字係拼唔到, knife, hour, island, 全部都唔得囉, 拼會讀錯, 所以一定係學ipa 先會有正音。而且phonetics 會幫助學埋文法, 自己會揀ipa 呢條路。開頭會難d, 但終身受用

have you guys heard about RWI (Reading write Inc) from Oxford? How about this one?

我諗佢果套synthetic phonics係嘗試O係phonics 同phonetics之間取個中間點, 因為佢有mention到"44原音" 不過正確d應該係 20 vowels and 24 consonants (夾埋44個英語ipa), 未上過佢o既班, 不過有留意佢o既講法都係o係"外國"好成功, 正如我都覺得phonics係啱d english 係mother tongue o既小朋友, 至於o係香港我諗問返d 已經用左rwi o既學校了解下會好d
