It mostly depends on the interview performance, not the KG you come from.

I agreed it depends on kids character and interview performance. I heard from my friend, even her kids only study at a not famous school, no homework type, she can got accepted by TSL, u know 3700 apllication this year. My daughter are study at Kln tong famous kindergarten, we are well prepared for interview a long time, such as reading, chi,Eng, and maths, we also failed. From my experience, the school need to find the kids had good academic, outspoken, convensation had quick response and good personality....etc They even not see your portfolio at the first interview....

DOn't worry!! My daughter isn't from the kindergarten in Kln Tong!
I believe the interview performance would affect the result a lot. Sometimes I even wonder the profolio is necessary or not

We live in Kln Bay and my son is studying in a kindergarten right next to our flat (just one minute walk). He has never attended any tutorial classes like phonics, maths or PTH. He is admitted to GT College (Primary Section), PLK LHT & Raimondi.

Thanks for your questions.
It's his fourth year studying in this school. When he was two, we enrolled him in the IN1 (International Nursery). During class, his class teachers talked to him either in PTH or English as they are native speakers. He did have some local teachers to assist the class activities. Basically he communicated with them with the target languages (both PTH and English)
Since then, he just continued his study in the international classes (IK1, IK2 & now IK3). He gets used to responding to his teachers in PTH and English but of course not as fluent as a native speaker. He has an Australian classmate and so he has to talk to him in English. His best friend is a PTH native. With such a strong motivation, he has to use it daily. My husband and I believe 'Practice makes perfect'.
Back to topic, we didn't enrol him for any tutorial classes or any interview training workshops. How do we equip him for interviews? We go to the public libary twice a month. We borrow both Chinese and English books for our two children. We read books together. What I mean is reading aloud not silent reading or just story-telling. We teach them to read some common words which can be freqently seen on story books and so. Sometimes my husband dramatises the plot with the kids. What's more, we read newspaper together. Whenever we come across some words he knows, we will ask him to read. We believe that our usual practice can enhance his speaking development, improve his pronunciation, know more vocabulary items and link what he learns to his real life.
We did train him by having daily revision. My husband spends around an hour a day to revise Chinese & Maths with him. I see to English revision. From time to time, he manages to read and recognise what his teachers taught him.
Before the P.1 interviews, we had rehearsals at home. We praised his good behaviour and of course we correct his inappropriate behaviour and the way he speaks.
Last but not least, we talk and play with our kids every night. My son is fond of playing Chinese chess and guessing games. So does my little daughter. We also sing karaoke together. I would say a good family ties provides them a healthy life. We seldom stay at home at weekends. We take them to visit different places in HK such as museums and parks. In addition to this, we take our kids to watch stage performance like magic show, kid's play at theatres. We want to broaden their horizons.
We haven't asked the others to help train our kids and perhaps this is our secret to my son's success in primary one admission.
God bless.

So, it means your son is studying in an international KG but not a common KG in which the teachers speaking in Cantonese except for the English class. That is the reason why your son got offers. For my son, he is only studying in common KG and all his classmates only speak Cantonese. That's why I think the interview's result is related to the KG they are studying (even the KG is not in Kowloon Tong).

My son's school is just a local kindergarten but it offers 4 international classes - IN1, IK1, IK2 & IK3 (i.e. using PTH and English as medium of instruction). For the rest, students are taught through Cantonese.
I have to admit that my son did have some advantages when he went for interview, especially he was asked to give responses in PTH. Though many schools offer PTH, it's just a subject alongside the curriculum. To my son, PTH isn't a subject but a language he uses for communciation. So is English.
Frankly, I can partly agree to your opionion. To me, a kid would definitely be awarded high marks if he or she is proficient in languages. However, a school also looks for kids who are obedient, willing to learn and confident. Will they be furious or bad-tempered when they fail to do something? If a kid is passive and quiet all the time, for sure, he or she won't be the principal's cup of tea.
My son is the kind of kids who need warm-ups. He is quiet and passive when facing strangers. I must say that we were lucky in his past interviews as each time he was given time to play and it gave him ample time to get used to the strange environment.
I can see how anxious you are. Mom, we must acept that our kids have strength and weakness. No one is perfect. Try your best and do your best. To round up my feedback, I would like to quote what William Hung said at the American Idol's, "I already gave my best, and I have no regrets at all". Every Dad or Mom will devote themselves to their own children. So do you and I. There is something that is out of hand ~ let's say, the teacher's comments or feedback during the interviews. I've seen so many cases that the parents thought their children performed well, however, they weren't admitted to their favourite schools. It happens all the time.
Good luck.. God bless your family.
