Has anyone submit the application to ESF for the 2011-2012 K1??? I've just submitted the form and sent the supporting doc to the school which applied. Does anyone know when will be the interview held?

If it's the same as last year... you will get an acknowledgement of receipt in November. They don't process anything until November. There's no interview like local schools, rather play visits.. which first rounds (children with priority and Cat 1) will start in January. They then do play visits according to categories and priorities until all spaces are filled.

I submitted the application via their online system but I didn't receive any acknowledegment from the school yet.......
Do you have the same problem as me?

I also applied Abacus ya... i think they will process all the application after October, since the application period from 2 - 31 Oct.

Hello~~friend!!
I am so worry for my son application....since he was borned in US but I answered all question with my honest......for example daddy and my first lang. is cantonese....but we only use english as our lang.
Will he become the cat. 2 or not???

unfortunately... yes. Cat 2. They don't look at the passport as much, but whether the child can access local school system, as determined by primary language used at home.

Thanks for your reply........but the problem of my B is he doesn't understands the chinese because we only speak english (including my helper) in our family

then you shouldn't have put down cantonese as family first language.
I assume you put down your son's language as english in the child part.
In your case, the Cat 1 and 2 is probably determined by the clerk that is sorting the application.
With ESF... always have a backup kindergarten to avoid disappointments. I had 2 backups even when I was sure that my son would get a space in ESF kindy... just in case.

you are so clever.....i only put "Cantonese" as the first language of parent becuase of my honest (or foolish)

If u apply abacus, and u put 'cantonese', u better need some backup school. As i know, this year K1, all is cat 1.

You are right.. Abacus K1 this year are almost all Cat 1 except for a few who are Cat 2 but they all have siblings in the ESF system.

I just put Cantonese on parent frist language but not my bb, is it really important??
I just sent the e-mail to ESF and I requested to change the choice of first language of parent into english.....I hope they can help!!

Agree... there is no Cat 2 children in CWBS at all.

That's not true. I'm pretty sure we were Cat 2 as we did indicate we both speak Cantonese and our son speak some too despite English being his first language, and we were still offered a place at CWBS after waiting on the waiting list for a few months. We eventually declined the offer because we already took another at another IS.

Cat. 1 meaning those non-cantonese families, meaning that there is no way their kids can study in a local school because the parents 'don't know cantonese'. In your case and to be honest, in most local families in Hong Kong, they have at least one or both parent who can speak cantonese but they 'chose' not to teach their kids. OK, maybe one or 2 Cat. 2 in CWBS G1 this year and you being a Cat. 2 parent gave up the placement. I think we are only trying to advise the new applicant that the chance is LOW and they should make alternative choices.

I think we should notice all parent whom want to apply ESF........ONLY put the answer "English" in all question about language!!! Even you are borned in HK and mother tongue is "Cantonese", "HONEST" is not necessary for the applicaton.....
Because one of my friend also made the same mistake.....since they are moved to Aust more than 25 YEARS with english speaking only and they only speak Cantonese before 10-year-old.....

I am sorry but I don't agree with your point of view. First of all, I don't agree that one should lie, because if everybody lie, I really do believe that ESF will do some assessment before taking the students. Just like the current Year 1 interview, I know a girl whose parent lie and after the interview, she was disqualified.
There are some ESF primary school which takes a fair amount of Cat. 2 student, e.g. SJS, KJS. If you really target ESF primary, you can consider moving to another catchment to suit your purpose but lying is definitely not the right way to go about it and for sure, not setting a good example for your kid. Agree! Able to speak Cantonese doesn't mean the chance to get in ESF kinder is slim, in fact the percentage of local kids is quite high in TY and WKS (not sure other campus). And the chinese teacher or EA can also test kids can speak Cantonese or not, so lying on the application form is not really safe since they have "informal play day" now.
For Y1 interview, I also heard that they do test those local kids who claim do not speak Cantonese.

ESF.....父母mother tongue係cantonese又唔可以...
我都好想教仔仔中文,但一開始佢就學英文,朋友仔又係外國小朋友(佢得一個朋友係中國人,但都係英文人)....一星期可能只有一天見到婆婆會聽到cantonese.....本身佢語言能力比較慢2歲都仲講唔出自己個名(我小時候都要3歲先識講野).....言語治療師又叫我唔好o係呢個時候教佢兩種語言,因為會令佢混淆,講說話能力只會更加慢....
我除o左本地學校同國際學校...我真係唔知仲有d咩可以選擇....好無奈~

there is no crime in being able to speak Cantonese. It is just that for parents planning to send their children to Abacus and CWBS, there are truly very very few Cat 2 students there.
Mind you... I heard some parents at the playdate (the trial class after parents have accept the offer)... and I was suprised! totally... cuz we are at Abacus.

Don't care about it!! Since my son is holding US passport and English speaking only.....But I put "my" first language as cantonese..... So...There is no chance for my son also~~ I will apply woodland and Tutor Time for him as the back-up~~

Ticket: HK$40 for Adult and HK$20 for Children
Activities:
Go Kart, Games, Face Painting, Magic Show, Fancy Dress, Bouncy Castle, etc.
Remarks:
NO PARKING at school on Saturday as we need the space for the Go Karts.

I just received the letter from ESF Abacus, my application is now placed on the waiting list, due to 180 applicants for only 88 places........some of the cat. 1 applicants are placed on waiting list also.............

They only have 88 places? on my letter, it only mentions there are 180 applications this year.

I also got the letter from Abacus telling me my gal is on the waiting list. Without an interview my b is not accepted (at least not at the moment) already. I really doubt if this is a 'fair' system and wonder why they charge me $300 for the application!

I just want to share my experience -- my son studied at ESF TY and now is at DC.
Before getting into ESF TY, I also searched BK for info and also got the impression that cat 2 is difficult to get in. Yet, my son got admitted in the first round although i put cantonese as the first language of our family. I think whether one kid gets admitted is purely luck cos ESF didn't do informal play date back then. It is true that TY has large % of local students, at least 80%.
For P1 interview, I don't think ESF will check whether a kid can speak cantonese or not and use this as a criteria for NOT accepting him/ her. For my son, all interviewers were non-Chinese. Then how can they test his cantonese? also I know a few cat 1 cases that were not accepted or were put on waiting list in the first round. Yet, my son was so lucky to get a place. I was indeed very happy and surprised cos he is a Dec boy too..... one important note is that he actually could not speak very good English at the time of interview....
To conclude, being cat 2 is no blame at all. So many applicants but yet limited places only. Then of course, many will be disappointed when they can't get a place. Just be prepared and have back-up plans for your kids.

yes, I think so.....the staff asked to think about Ma On Shan ESF.....I said it is too far for me.....since I'm living in TKO!!!

Not news really.. My son goes to Abacus and when we went to the parents meeting, there were at least 5 pair of parents that day who claim themselves to be Cat 1 spoke really good Cantonese to the school bus company.
But Ms. Frances, the principal has always been very honest at the info meeting, that if you are Cat 2 and even being admitted to Abacus, your chances of getting into CWB school is near 0.

The general rule of thumb for ESF kindy is that if they invite you for a play visit, they have a place for you. They just want to meet with the child and make sure there is no special education concerns.

Several friends of mine, including myself, have applied ESF K1 (various campus) for our kids. And seems that they have several different kinds of result letters to parents:
1) Got place offered and invitation to play visit
2) On waiting list but invitied to play visit
3) On waiting list but no invitition to play visit and also advised parents to try other campus (i.e.WKS) due to long waiting list.
Any others ?

For those who are on waiting list but still got invitation to the playvisit, I believe they are consider and direct quote from their letters "...you are high on our waiting list...". I guess they would like to meet those kids during the playvisit as well so that they could make offer to them when seats are become available (sure not 100% of successful applicants would accept the offers, right ?)
