How's your girl's phonics class? Is there any classmates join? Since last time they said Level 3 is a bit too fast for my son, so I might quit that after Sept... and maybe change to Enopi English. Any comments on Enopi English??

Can't believe it, my girl has done the writing by herself before I gone home ah....... unbeliveble when I opened the booklet. I can go out for fun every night lah, hahaha...........
I followed the bonus system of a mum on Sun TV show immediately. i.e. I gave my girl a star sticker tonight for the good work, and tell her if she can do the homework by herself every day before I come home, I will give her another star, once she can accumulate 5 stars, she can play Vii with her dad. She is happy about it.......if it works, I really can go out for fun every night lah, hehehe.....

Today is her first phonic lesson, 2 kids in the class. I don't know if it is good or not yet.....tell you after more observation. If my girl reaches level 3 (but that will take more than half a year), your son and her can learn togther woh.
For Enopi English, I know a kid is learning it in QQ Club, I can ask information for you and let you know later. But as far as I know, Enopi Eng. involves many writing, so, it may not fit your son if he cannot sit for too long to write. Anyway, give you more information after consulting my friend.

HI ALL
Mind if I join the conversation ?
For RWI, it emphasis the phonics then blending and then learn how to spell a word by listening to the sound. This course is a combination of both phonics and writing. For the 1st few months they will teach you simple phonics then blend the word together. eg: CAT, you know the sound of C, A, T but then the students should be able to put the sound together then get the right sound. Then they will move the more writing and listen to the tutor and write the word down. Next they will move to more difficult sound like th, ou, ay, oy and eg..... When you move higher , they will read some passage , hold a sentence where they will listen to the tutor and write the word down (a bit like unseen dictation) and also some writing.
I find this is quite good as both my children will blend the word and read those out before they come to me for help.
As for Enopi English, more on writing and comprehension. Depends on your level and the content may be a bit different. My son is learning things like on the table, under the table and etc..
HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi all Mums,
I also would like to join your conversation ar, may I?
My son also in K2 this year. He now is having Enopi Maths, swimming, english course & music course. Both my son & I quite satisfy with Enopi Maths, workbooks are colourful, and easy to follow.
I am also considering whether to join Enopi Eng. or phonics course, or both. Do u know KCS still has phonics this year? If yes, join phonice course outside will be duplicated? Also, will Enopi Eng. includes phonics as well? I am so 心大心細ar.
Do u have any recommendation of center about phonce course? Thank you very much inadvance ar.
KCS will continue to teach Jolly Phonics this year until K3. Yes, you are right, there are duplication. If you are satisifed with the progress in school, there is actually no need to join any phonic course outside.
As far as I know, Enopi English do not emphasis on phonics. I personally do not have recommendation yet as my girl just starts her phonic class in a very small education centre, I am not sure if it is good or not. I know some people have joined RWI and some joined Jolly Kingdom for phonics. You may visit their websites for details.

will your daughter listen to your advice of correct sequence of writing word? For my girl, she's now having strong believe that she's doing things right. A bit difficult for me to change her mind... I will let her do the homework before I back home. However, after i back home, i will ask her to write a few times of the word in another paper to make sure she writes the word correctly.

Same same, my girl is stubborn too......and insist her sequence is correct. Need to induce (sometimes force) her to listen for most of the time. I think most kids are like this.......have their own 主見。
I have thought of your way, however, I am afraid it will be more difficult for me to correct her if she has got used to writing it in a wrong sequence for several times in the day time.
I think the problem I have observed is not only the correct sequence, another problem is she forgets how to write after I close the Book. I am pretty sure she cannot write me the word 土 and 上 now without the Copy Book in front.

As far as I know, KCS KG does not have dictation and test/exam from K1-K3. This is why I like this KG.....just let the students enjoy their happy childhood in KG without too much study pressure........
I do believe with more practice, the kids can memorise the words...........it is not a must for school to have dictation to force them to remember at such an early age.

May be I could answer that, my son has RWI for a year but for Enopi English only for about 3 months.
For RWI, at the begining they will emphasize on phonics then blending. Then they will come to a level where they will need to read a book, write the sentence and then hold a sentence ie: like an unseen dictation. There will be no homework at home.
As for Enopi English, they have some books to read and write. The books they use in the class is pretty easy and the one at home is more difficult. Whether you will have homework at home, it all depends on your centre, I think you need to check this part with your centre. My centre will not tend to give homework.
For the book, for smaller kids like K2, the easy level is writing the A B C understanding colours and etc then it will come to a level where they will need to know preposition like on, under and etc

To me, looking for edcuation centre to learn English is just like Trial an Error. A course that fit one kid may not fit you and it also depends on the expectation of a mum. So, I think it is good that you ask for a trial lesson so that you can have a grimpse of what it likes first. Besides, smaller the class size, the better.

My son doesn't really like to do his homework of writing, I think its because he dones't like to copy. He just wants to write in his own way. Every time I have to rubber out several times of his homework, I know this is not good to him, but his writing is really bad, I have to hold his hand to do with him. Really time consuming.

GIPW,
Thank you very much for the information.
Since KCS is using "oxford story tree" as english books, is that RWI using same story books? Are they same?
One of my friend's kid is having Cambridge English. She said the first leverl was hard for the kid who was not live in a english speaking family.
BTW, I can't find any bigger size pencil in the book store, but just colour pens. I brought some 筆套 to mak pencils thicker instead.

RWI is not using Oxford Story Books. My kid has joined RWI for 4 months but quited as it did not fit my expecation (or my girl). It is using "Read with Phinine" book series at the elementary level, another interesting set of books.
To declare, I am not saying RWI is not good, just not fit my girl only. So, don't be scared by my case : )

For Cambridge English, I think you are talking about the one that will have the students to sit for the Starter, Mover, etc. If really exam oriented, I can imagin those courses will not be that interesting and will have the students to 操 a lot of exercise. I doubt if it is good for a small kid to learn a language like this woh.......but if one wants a certificate for P1 interview, I think no harm to join. But I think to learn a language well at such a young age, I prefer them to learn in a fun way.....without exam pressure.

concerning about doing homework, i prefer not always rub out those did by my daughter (even it was not written very good). For those words written very badly, i will try to rub them, however, if just some minor ones, i will leave them to the teacher and they will mark them back in "red pen" what's wrong with the kids' writing. I think it's a good way to let my daughter knows she did not write good for some words (at least has not reached the teacher's standard).
This way works fine for my daughter, she will write it with more patient next time and looks she can get some improvement.

Hi YiuChunMa
For Cambridge English, they only emphasis on Exam. For my experience, you need not spend money on this, just buy the exercise and do at home. Last time my girl took the exam when she is K3 and got 14 shields while of my friends sit for mover and got 1r shields too and we have not gone for any courses. Just simply download the syllabus and go thru the word with your children.

Agreed that this is mostly for knocking door purpose. My boy is also a small boy but bigger than Tata1668 one, by the time he got his result, he will have attended all the interview already.
But I think I will still ask him to sit for the exam not in Sept as this is the prime time for interview, maybe in Dec

My approach is the same as bwm. If we keep on erasing our kids' badly written words, they may lose confidence or interest in writing gradually.........
GIPW, for Cambridge English, even teach at home by ourselves, our kids will still have the exam pressure and need to 操 exercise..........I still have reservation on letting our kids to sit for public exam in KG stage. My approach is different from yours : )
I really have many ideas & suggestions from all of you via this sharing, thank you all, very useful.
From this week, I am trying to control my hands not to erase my son’s writing, unless it is very unacceptable. Teacher’s correction should be more useful for him to understand the standard of the school.
I agree with Sorb that I also don’t want to put too much pressure on my son at kinder stage, I wish him to have a happy kinder life, because he will have exams in the coming 10+ years. I am really appreciated that KCS doesn’t need to dictation, exam etc. Its good for kids, at least they will not refuse to go to school.

I understand the feeling of being earsed off the homework... cause my mom did that to me when I was a child... I always remind myself cannot expect the small boy to write a perfect word. I just need him to write inside the box, and look like what it should be. So far, he is improving
GIPW, I might let my son to take the Cambridge exam when he reaches 5. I won't take any courses cause I think he can handle that. Well, still have more than 1 year. How long did your daughter prepare for the first exam?
Sorb, I think it is ok for the kid to attend the public exam in K3 wor (unless you have to attend a lot of courses and do tons of papers before the exam). It could be an experience and she might easy to handle her exams. By the way, I used the method that you suggest last time. My son collects stickers by finishing his homework everyday. 3 more stickers then he can get his reward - a Chinese Dino Book! He works so hard

Well, Tata1668, from what we have shared, I think you know my way of nuturing my kid. I am pretty relax (you can say due to my laziness) and do not "buy" the approach to "drill" too far at young age. Learning is a life long process, she will have to face the reality of exam in P1 (and then for another 16 years), I wish to let her enjoy her childhood in KG stage and then face exam when she is a bit older......when in P1, I trust she will be able to understand more what's the meaning of exam.
You plan to sit for it when your boy reaches 5, right? As my girl is not a small "B", she will be 5 half a year later, I really cannot imagin how she understand the concept of exam and is willing to sit inside an exam hall for such a long time to finish the exam half a year later. This seems like a 天荒夜譚 to me : )
You and GIPW, add oil!!! You 2 have my spiritual support though I will not join you 2, hahaha.......

My girl just took 2 months to prepare the exam. I bought some of the exercise and let her do then most important to be able to spell some fo the vocab that you can get from the syllabus. She thinks it is fun just told her this is another kind of game and no pressure on her on whatsoever result that she might get.

I was wondering over the last weekend that does KCS still 分 中文部 & 英文部@ its primary school? If so, how can we get into 英文部?
BTW, have you all read yesterday's newspaper? there was a news about a Dad was dead on this Wed moring during the way to KCS, becasue of he fall down from the staircase @fort street while he sending his daughter to school. KCS primary (local stream) does not 分 中文部 & 英文部. Some people when saying 英文部, they are refering to KCIS, the international stream.

For KCS primary international stream, if you are interested, you may consider applying now..... firstly, it accept application on a 1st come 1st served basis (I learnt no interview is required). Secondly, P1 of KCIS equal to K3 of KCS (local). So, if you are interested in it, your kid can switch to KCIS P1 next academic year lah.

Hello Tata1668,
My son is also 0612 B ar. I agreed that there is big difference between small B & big B. Originally I wanted him to repeat K1, but his teacher said K1 was easy, may consider to repeat at K2. The main point I consider is his 小肌肉development, ie his writing. May be I need to seek teacher's advice again later.
One more thing is if repeat K2, that means many 2007 BB were born on that year, so more competition to face when apply P1.....
