Personally I don't have much knowledge in Art but my child is very interested in drawing and painting, that's why I want to find an Art class for her for the purpose of enjoyment mainly and if there's improvement in her skills, that'll be a bonus. I've tried the art class offered by YMCA but found that as the teachers work on a freelance basis, my child might have to meet different teachers from time to time if I continued to join the course, which I don't think is good for my child's learning. Lately, I enrolled in a class recommended by a friend whose son showed great improvement in sketching skills after several years of learning. But the first time when I met the teacher, she spent a long time discussing with me the expectation seriously. Her art class mainly focuses on skills and I sensed that the ultimate goal of the centre is to train up students for public exams whatever (though she claimed that the cultivation of interest is the key concern). She said that most art classes which emphasize the importance of creativity are wasting the children's time in the sense that the children have learnt nothing about the skills in drawing. When I observed the class, I found that every child was sitting very quietly doing their work. The atmosphere was very 正經. Though I've paid the fee for one month, I'm not sure if this is what my child and I are looking for.

I just want to hear from your opinions-what do you think are the key elements for a children's art class? Skills or cultivation of interest, creativity?

Thank you all for the quick reply. I'll think seriously about your comments. BTW, anno_ho, I know yours is a private teacher. What is the rate per hour? Is it expensive?
