Students in Island School [and other ESf schools] need to choose the langauage(s) to learn. The details can be found in
http://clc.esf.edu.hk/GroupHomepage.asp?GroupId=224
(Island School>Departments>Modern Foreign Languages>PATHWAYS)
Can any ESF parents share ideas how to make the decision? Many thanks!

Oh, there must be some problems with pm again. Maybe I just tell you the info. here, pls note that every ESF school may have different policies and I can only tell you based on what I know from my kid's school(not Island School).
1. If your kid is Chinese, it seems to make more sense to choose Mandarin in year 7 and continue upto GCSE and IBD. Students are allocated to different Mandarin groups based on their standards. Whether he will take IB A1 or A2 or B in Chinese IBD depends on his standard at that time. Teachers will give you recommendations.
2. All students can choose one more foreign language in year 8 or 9, based on their interest. They can continue to learn it upto GCSE and IBD level, students will have to decide before year 10 based on their interest.
3. All students normally have to take English A1 in IBD because ESF use English as their first language. They also must take English and English literature in GCSE.
Just a further note, I feel that ESF secondary school is much tougher than in primary, kids have to do assignments since year 7 to prepare them to cope with both GCSE and IBD in future. Not sure if this is also happening in Island School though. Students also must join different activities according to their CAS requirements.
Hope this helps.

Hi WYmon,
Many thanks for the information. It is very useful. Thus, "All students normally have to take English A1 in IBD because ESF use English as their first language. They also must take English and English literature in GCSE."
It means that it is clear that their first langauge is English and what we need to consider is the remaining one.
In addtion to regarding English as the first language in ESF schools, which another one to be taken? Chinese, French, Japanese or Spanish? This is a topic that can be involved in a long, long discussion.
The idea is, it depends on:
1) What the child is intereted in;
2) The background of language/langauge learning of the child;
3) The future job/career and the living place of the child
Any parents here can share?
