Hi, can anyone share the pros and cons of studying A-level in UK? My girl is sitting at the last CE these months. She expects to have 20-24 scores. She is not confident to achieve good results in HK A-level but she wishes to study at top tier universities. Would it be better and easier for her to study A-level in UK? Or stay in HK?

Your reply cheers me up. I am sure you have made a right decision to send your son abroad.

Does your son treat academic lessions, homework and exams not serious?
no la, he got the academic award. He said he was a role model in the school becasue he still studies very hard. The teacher gave him the A2 level books for him to study by his own. That is why he can take the AS level public exam in this May/June during Lower six. If he can get more A, then he can get the offer from the top Univeristy.

Hi T-mama, do you mean your son can enter to university one year early? I am a bit confused by your response. To my knowledge, I know that Lower Six students need to sit in AS exams and Uppler Six students need to sit in A2 exams. Am I correct?
Your son is great. He is given A2 books, I am sure he is able to study well by himself. Will the school provide him extra support to raise his academic performance?

Normally, the Lower six students take AS level in Jan in Upper Six, only few students can take them in May/June in Lower Six.

Hi T-mama,
your son study aboard after HKCEE, then, may I know when did your son apply for the school in UK, and did th school inUK assess your son by means of his school results or did he need to take entrance exam of the UK school?
Hi T-mama, please can you share with me your son's HKCEE score? What is the timesonline ranking of your son's current school in UK?
My son get 3A,2B,3C,1D in his HKCEE (Science student). He goes overseas becasue he wantes to follow his father's step - to study in overseas, becasue his father is the hero in his eyes. Now, he studies psy ,triple maths, physics, music and music technology in UK. He likes music, it is also a good enviroment to study music in UK becasue there is no music A-level in HK now.
His school is called Oundle School, it is around in 59 position in UK school ranking. He said the stress is not as big as in HK. Therefore he can study happily. The class is in 小班教學 style. The relationship between the teachers and students are very close. He told me that he got the acadmic award again in last semester.
By the way, different child has different personality. Some students may have a home sick. Therefore the parent cannot force the child to study overseas. Like my elder son, he has no interest to go overseas. The child would be happy if it is his own decision. Luckily my son has no homesick at all.

Normally, we must apply one year in advance if you want to study in UK. My son is the very special case ,he applied it after HKCEE 放榜. One day, my husband brought him to see the exhibition becasue he wanted to find some Unveristies information for my elder son. However, the agent ask my 2nd son whether he likes to study overseas and what his HKCEE result is. Then he got 2 offers immediately from Concrod School and Oundle School. Later he goes through the telephone interview with the teacher in Admission dept and he decides to leave DBS and goes to UK to have a try.Actually, I prefer he stays in DBS than study in UK. However, it is his own decision and I can afford it. So I let him go. He is very happy now although I lost 6,000 留位費 for F.6 in DBS. The other reason is he does not like Chinese subject, he does not want to suffer 2 more year of Chinese.

Hi T-mama, thanks for your share. Both Concord and Oundle are good schools in UK. I realise to study with UK top schools, we must apply at least a year ahead, however, our decision to study abroad was a bit late (this January). The agents told us that many good schools in UK were closed for Sixth Form application. We only got an offer from a UK school ranked 140. We are not sure if my daughter can share your son's luck to get an offer from one of the top schools in UK. She is sitting for HKCEE this year. She expects she is able to get 20-24 scores. She wishes to study abroad either in UK or US. It is really difficult for us as parents to make a right decision.

may I know why you choose the present school but not Concord?

My friend said that Oundle has the most advanced science lab out of all UK boarding schools in UK and last year over 20 students went to Oxbridge while 33 Oundle students went to Oxbridge in 2008. My son is also on the waiting list of Year 10 in Oundle though I only applied for this school during December last year.

Hi T-mama and CPU1995,
It is really good that T-mama's son is going on the right track and have been doing very well.
Do you think usually a child can get used to the life in UK if he/she goes for A-level study? Or he/she should go off earlier, e.g. aged 11 for grade7 or 13 for grade 9, for better adaptation?

My son is studying F.3 now and I'm not sure whether he can adapt to UK school life in the coming Sept. In fact, I've not yet made up my mind whether I would choose Monmouth School, King's School Canterbury or Oundle School for him.

As far as I know, the place available for Year 10 in Oundle is 1 in 2010. You'd better apply either Year 7, 9 or 12 which is the main entry. You may browse the following to see the entrance papers of Oundle:
http://www.oundleschool.org.uk/admissions/scholarships/index.php
I applied Oundle on last year's December by writing direct to the school. Personally, I don't trust agency in HK as they just receive commission from school for successful case. So most advice from them on boarding schools are biased or even giving you false information!
Since I am a little bit too late to start searching school and Yr 10's place is very limited, you'd better submit application one year beforehand for more choices of schools.

Thanks very much for your information.
Did your son sit for Oundle's extrance exam? I noticed there is also test on foreign language ( French, Spanish or Latin), what if the applicant does not have any knowledge on the language, will the school allow exemption?
I started gathering information on UK schools since last year. I hope my son will go to UK to study F. 4 in 2012. Do you have any recommendations?

My son sat for Oundle exam in the British Council in Jan and he said that the papers were very simple and the Maths papers was of Form 1 standard. The papers were as follows:
Time (AM) Subject Time (AM) Subject
10.00 - 11.00 Maths – 1 hr 11.15 - 12.15 English – 1hr
Time (PM) Subject Time (PM) Subject
2.00 - 3.00 pm Science – 1hr 3.15 - 4.00 pm Ability Test – 45 mins
For Oundle, there is 8 HK/China students out of 196 in Year 10 and 10 HK/China students out of 215 in Year 12 in this year. The class size is about 18. The requirements to be admitted to Sixth Form is at least 3 A grades and 3 B grades in HKCEE/GCSE.
Personally I only have friends whose children are studying in Monmouth School and Shrewsbury School. They highly recommend these two boarding schools for student discipline, caring and accommodation.
In fact I am asking all around to seek advice from others. My recommendation is that you would consider writing direct to school to establish relationship with Registrar and Headmaster. From this you would know which school is sincere or otherwise bureaucratic and get the first hand information. In one case, the Registrar invites us to visit him in case he comes to Hong Kong in the coming Sept though there is no place available at the moment.
According to two DB and DG parents, they recommend the following Oxbridge boarding schools whereas the DB/DG students have been successfully admitted to Oxbridge:
Abington/ Brighton/ Badminton/ Cheltehham Ladies/ Charterhouse/ Harrow/ Oundle/ Tonbridge/ Shrewsbury/ Winchester
Hopes this can help you.
