岩岩有個媽媽咁同我講...傳統既幼稚園好似聖心..ST. PAUL..如果小朋友答老師問題既時候..用英文答係會扣分架...係咪真架??

I also heard that most of the traditional school expect kids answer question in Cantonese.

My friend's kid responded to the teacher in English during the interview; after the interview, the teacher asked the mammy " Can your kid speak Cantonese?" Perhaps the teacher will deduct some marks la.

This is also my case. Since I speak to my girl in English since she was borned, thus she tends to speak English whenever she see someone. She responded to the teacher in English during her interview at St. Sum, teacher keeps asking her, "what is it in Cantonese?" I think teacher has secretly put a "X" in her application form... at the end, she got rejected by St. Sum.

我相信係啦...除非係去d比較國際化的幼稚園會比較重視英文啫....就連st. paul co-edu 都會自己學校十分重視母語...所以..真係唔係太緊張英文的...因為小學時..中文難過英文好多

我個b去in聖心時，老師問問題後，是由我翻譯英文俾佢聽(翻譯前我問過老師可否由我用英文轉述問題，老師話「可以！」)，阿b 100%是用英語答問題，其間，有幾條問題老師都係用英文問阿b tim, 最後聖心都收了她，所以我覺得用英文答問題是不會扣分的。

只是本人淺見..

我認為學校要求小朋友會說&明白廣東話也是理所當然的, 因為小朋友要群體學習, 語言絕對是最基本的溝通方法, 他/她不明白老師/同學的說話, 對學習&與別人的相處可能會引起障礙..

First of all, I can't be very sure should SHCK be categorized as a traditional kindergarten. So whether it is a good example, this I have no comments.

Anyhow, for the case of SHCK, there are definitely children who speaks majority English (meaning can't communicate in Cantonese), got accepted last year, and as they attend the kindergarten, be able to communicate with other children in Cantonese. They certainly will be slower in the first few months as they need time to adjust, but they will soon make such adjustment to it and be able to mix well with the children.

They are looking for kids understand Cantonese no matter their answers or replies are in Cantonese or English.

I have a friend whose daughter seems didn't understand Cantonese and was rejected by SPK last year.

I have a friend who has to translate all the question from Cantonese to English and her daughter was rejected by SH.

It is the kid's interview not the parents, those parents who 'translate' or give helping hand to their kids ruin their kid's interview.

My daughter, answering all question in English but she SEEMS understand Cantonese, was accepted by SH this year!

Now I'm very worried. My girls only speak English and probably comprehend Cantonese about 5-10%. GCCC1231 and Charmykitty, how did your girls manage to speak English only but understand Cantonese so well? How did you prepare them? I have less than 1 yr to train them up. They'll be going to nursery in Aug/Sept.

have your twins been accepted yet? if yes, no worries at all!! children pick up very quickly, try exposing them more to cantonese

No ah.... :( They need to go to Nursery this year first because they are "big girl" in 2008. But I would like them to go to SH in 2011. Any tips to prepare them? (we tried to speak Cantonese with them but they ignored us)....arrrrrggggghhhh

SHCK is my target too; perfect for us since its very close by. my daughter is also a big B

So far, my kids have interviewd 2 schools- 1 rejected, 1 accepted. I am waiting for Victoria interview and applying to SPN. How about you?

Hi Wootaitai, is your daughter a 08 bb or 07bb? My girls already attend a English/ Cantonese playgroup but somehow, I don't think they actually understand Cantonese. The helpers told me sometimes, the teacher gives up and speak to them in English!!!! Aiya.....

As my dau has been attending playgroup and now nursery at an international N&K when there are only foreigner as NET and mainland as PTH teacher. They don't allow even the parents to speak Cantonese within their campus. So my dau could answer question in English and PTH. I even don't let my dau to watch Cantonese TV.

As to Cantonese, we (my wife, my parents and I) simply chat with each other and with my dau in full Cantonese, so my dau understand fully and well in Cantonese.

Nothing special need to do if you want your kid to fully understand Cantonese, simply speaks to your kid in Cantonese and having conversation amongst the parents in Cantonese and let your kid to listen more!

Kid at the age of 2-3 is a spongee robot! What you give what the kid get!

Thanks GCCC1231. Thanks for your advice. I will try to enforce my family to talk to them in Cantonese. I'll probably continue with English to them because I also want them to speak English like other kids in foreign countries. Such greedy mummy.

No, not a native speaker but I'd spent a long time outside of HK so my Cantonese level is at a elementary level.

I'm not the right person to teach them Cantonese lah. ;) Will let my husband do that. My wish is for them to be really bilingual.

I am actually in the same boat ....well except my girl is an end of 0712 baby.. our foot path is similar to yours is she is rejected by ALL k's applied 2009.... we will have to do the same thing all over this year!

We will applied SPN, but did not applied for Vic. as she is now in PN already...

因為我個囡今年IN聖心既時候..都係用英文答..每答一條問題..面試位老師都會再問佢一次咁中文係咩丫? 佢答哂所以問題..做哂老師既指令..但係聖心係唯一一間REJECTED我個囡既..咁岩IN ST.PAUL果日..我係圖書館遇到位媽媽..佢好心提醒我話傳統幼稚園小朋友用英文答問題..會扣分咁話..所以我就上黎再問下其他有經驗既爸爸媽媽意見囉...
小朋友讀書面試..真係一條漫長既路..各位爸爸媽媽一齊加油啦!! 最重要大家盡量以平常心去面對~~

i guess the school would like the student to know chinese as chinese (especially written) is more difficult to learn than english
