Does anyone know about Casterton School? This school gives an admission offer to my daughter for studing Year 9 in 2010, I just want to get more information about this school before accepting the offer. Thanks.

Have you checked her ranking on Timeonline Education. Good academic results though it is not all after all.

Casterton ranks 140 in the league table this year:-

According to the school report, academically her GCSE O-level is in line with the average of selective schools:-

So not a top tier school but not too bad either.

I have a friend whose daughter is now studying Sixth Form in Casterton. My friend has once told me that more than half of her daughter's class are Chinese who come from either HK or Mainland China. This may explain the reason for the good academic performance of this school as there is a general observation/comment that schools with more Chinese students tend to have better academic performance.

The aggregation of Chinese students is in fact a common phenomenon in many of the UK schools, especially those popular ones, nowadays. The situation would become more obvious in Sixth Forms as many of the HK/Chinese parents like to send their sons/daughters to study in UK after they have completed the O-level.

The school is situated in a rural area which is far from city. My friend likes the school as there are not much distraction around to affect her daughter. But, her daughter doesn't like it and always complains that the school is too boring, old ........... . It depends on what you are expecting from the school.

My friend didn't mention the teaching quality. But, if you want to know, you can take a look at their inspection report where there are detailed descriptions.

My friend has told me there is one thing of the school her daughter appreciates which is the food quality the school provides. However, her daughter has difficulty in entering the circle of the local British girls who are unwilling to make friends with Chinese girls. So, she has no choice but to aggregate with the Chinese girls. Therefore, other than the lesson times, she communicates in Cantonese instead of English with her friends.

Thanks. I have studied her inspection reports and all the information on the school's website. It seems a good school. To be honest, we are keen to choose a higher ranking school for my girl if all possible because she is studying in one of the top girls schools in HK and her academic performance is average at school. We wish she continues her study with a top good school. That is why we cannot make up our mind to accept the offer. We knew from other channels that top UK universities tend to accept students from top high schools. Do you know this?

If your expection is so high, Casterton should not be your choice.

If you have so much confidence on the academic performance of your daughter, why don't you apply those schools of very high ranking, e.g. St. Catherine, St. Swithun, Badminton, the Cheltenham Ladies' College, Wycombe Abbey School .................. It seems that your choice of school is not consistent with your expection. This is just my opinon.

Don't give up yet.  My agent told me those top schools would give discretion or special consideration to those genuine top students.

Top students with outstanding school reports would surely be given a chance to take the entrance exam even though the school has formally announced closing of the application period or full house already.  If the student gets outstanding results in the papers, they will be accepted right away.

It is students with average or even poor academic performance would be rejected for the reason of close of deadline or full house of the school.

My agent told me last year a DGS girl approached him to find a UK school very late in May/June.  But, since she was very smart, she was eventually offered a place by a top UK school in Sept.

I also decided my girl to study in Casterton next year and some questions I would like to know also. How far is the school from airport and how long do the girls need to take to back to school? Does she like the school environment? How is the schedule and what they can do during weekdays and weekends?

This is a very strange league table.
Winchester & Harrow don't even figure in the top 100 with Eton only at 85!
