你們有沒有打算去外國升學？我剛剛將 2009年 World Top 200 Universities 的排名，再附帶她們每一所在過往幾年(2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004)的排名走勢，做了一個PDF，有興趣可以通知我，稍後email 給想用作參考的同學。此外，你們可否發表一下，你們最喜愛的十所大學？不用理會排名、地區，總之隨心所想！謝謝分享。

我個人現在最喜愛十所大學如下：
Cambridge>(Harvard, Oxford, U. of Chicago)>(清華, Edinburgh, HKU, U. of Iowa, Lancaster U., McGill U.)

個人喜惡是很難解釋的！正如有很多人喜愛徐志摩的詩一樣；畢竟是人生變幻無常，上天賦與給他的才華及富裕家境，他卻英年早逝，意外墜機身亡，真的是「輕輕的」 走了......

胡湊都可以湊得這樣好，估算閣下可能是「八十前」！

可悲的是，今時今日的香港學生巳經被這個制度當成不同效能的電腦硬件，教育就是如何灌以「不斷改良」的軟件，家長及學校只要確保軟件最更新，通過考試來製造一個測試硬件的英雄榜，令大家分辨出優勝劣敗。可是，無論誰勝誰負，原來大家都是輸家，因為他們並不只是受人擺佈的機器...如果能夠無拘無束地欣賞這些斑爛的文學作品，我認為總比較浪費時間上MSN 及Facebook等為好！

甘你有本事唔依靠呢個系統而可以搵到吃既﹐你喜歡點玩學問都得﹐問題系人在屋檐下﹐不得不低頭。有時應該掉轉頭黎捻﹐考試考既系你對付文件資訊的吸收／處理能力﹐如果你連呢D能力都無﹐甘又玩乜學問呢?

我倒覺得喜歡與否,全是心境問題.你心中充滿詩意,看任何景物都是美.反之,心裡太多雜念,看見同樣景色,也不覺得多美,沒有他們的生活環境回憶,香港好些沙灘也比它美.

首先，如果我認真咁答， 請勿介意，我會說我不認同「學問」等如「學識」，就算一位考試肥晒佬的人也可以「玩學問」，這個人可以被人話佢無「學識」而揾唔到份筍工，但是佢可以做夠三份勞工而自食其力，咁就是一種「學問」。講番正題，我說今時今日的香港教育是可悲，我都可以呻吓卦，並不代表我個人沒有積極去面對現實，我時刻都正在幫子女在應付考試和發展興趣兩者之間，找尋適當的平衡，也不代表我向教育制度低頭。

心境對感覺確是有影響，是可以理解。如果景色實在真是美，令人心曠神怡，或者會令心裏的雜念消失，人變得正面，煩惱想得通，心境自然好，正如你所說，這一刻，看任何景物都是美。所以我個人認同有些景物會一見鍾情，有些景物則會愈看愈美...

不好意思，我有啲資料一時三刻在硬盤找不到，例如大學收生條件e.g. Harvard requires SAT I&II Scores 650-800 及熱門Faculty等等...owing to my poor knowledge management.

我比較鐘意英國既大學, 不過真係好貴.


純粹一些個人觀感：我覺得讀Undergraduate degree，英國大學較好(揀一些前身並非Polytechnic的U會好啲)，而且治安不錯，搭火車和揸車都很方便，學費生活費則較貴，兼職較困難。如果讀Graduate school，美國大學有較多好的選擇，不過社會也較複雜，metropolitan downtown治安差，suburban無車唔掂，兼職則較容易。

我覺得有些人說香港讀得唔好才出國讀書是錯誤觀念！Overseas studies除咗擴闊視野和學習不同文化外，最重要是個人思考能力會有更大得着，能夠選擇一間資源豐富的好大學，修讀適合自己的學科，而財政又無困難的話，絕對是值得。而且海外讀幾年大學，會感覺特別快過，毋須太多顧慮。讀書一定有壓力，不過，生活在一個景色優美的大校園，絕對可以抒緩壓力和幫助思考，這是香港環境所欠缺的。很多時在海外，香港學生經常聚埋，唔係咁好，應該爭取多啲exposure in local culture and informal learning experiences ...

英國家下d大學都好多香港同大陸學生, 想少d 同中國人聚埋, 都唔係咁易. 當年我呀哥揀學校都揀leeds, 因為果時(都30年前)真係好少香港人. 將來我都想送呀仔去英國讀大學 (如果經濟許可). 有幾間我都鍾意:

ICL 於QS 2010年世界頂級大學排名第七、2009年排名第五，以讀Engineering出名嘅鼎鼎大名ICL，竟然於The Independent 2011 University League Table 嘅General Engineering 無排名，真係幾odd，睇吓上面剛剛post出嚟2009年都係無排名，咁大間報館連續錯兩次嗎？又再睇吓上面剛剛post出嚟The Guardian University Guide 2011:General Engineering，ICL 排名第四，問題係邊度？

Imperial自己都講,"Some of the subjects (for example General Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering) are not included in all three league tables due to differences in subject mapping."

除了Guardian，其他兩個league tables: Times 同 The Independent都無做ICL的General Engineering。我所能做到，係唔好連抄都抄錯俾人睇，提供資料作為導引，好像閣下等用心做事的人，如果使用資料，必定會再參考埋Guardian, Times, QS等等去求證，如果只像一些被家長寵壞了的王子、公主，飯來張口，人哋講就信，唔肯花一點功夫去求證，錯用咗便返嚟駡我，我都無辦法，希望佢哋還懂得從錯誤中學習啦。
既然Guardian League Table 好似較全面，咁點解仲要post The Independent，皆因佢提供埋讀邊個Faculty，乜嘢大學會較受歡迎，申請者都可以知彼知己，post 個 top university rankings 出嚟有幾難，如果我自己係用家，我會唔會收貨？何況很多希望赴英攻讀的學生，都唔係個個天之驕子， Oxbridge 或 top ten 對佢哋係唔實際。

講開又講，恕怪我見識少，如果諗住只求入到ICL而揀General Engineering，我自己倒不如過隔嚟LSE讀History，起碼我聽過"History repeats itself!"，我諗對我會有更大嘅得着，讀General Engineering我都唔見得會揾到食，係讀都讀專啲嘅Aeronautical Engineering啦。

If aim at Investment Bank as future career, which one is better.

If extend the choice outside HK, add on LSE either in BSc Economics or BSc Accounting and Finance. What's your view?

Although the league tables mostly rank Warwick top in Accounting & Finance, I think LSE is the best.  No doubt, LSE is a big name for starting new career in investment banking for sure.

In Hong Kong,  I hear HKUST is more vocational than academic relative to HKU and CUHK.  If so, I would choose

HKUST > HKU >>> CUHK

How about "global" business? I don't know whether you mean start your own global business or overseas recruitment.  But please don't overestimate the value of the brand names of our local institutions as compared with the Ivy League, LSE, etc.  There is still a long way to go.  Nevertheless the success of HKUST Business School is due to the combined efforts of many people especially Prof Paul Chu and has also been benefited from the rapid growth of China's domestic economy.

"choice" is either a noun or adjective. You should use "choose" instead.  HKU, HKUST, CUHK are very good universities. You should have no regrets for time spent studying over there.

I would say HKUST and CUHK are the best and I prefer HKUST.
HKUST: higher ranking in business related subjects
CUHK: was the best in providing business subjects but seems to be taken over by HKUST
HKU: not so good in business subjects

Here is my two cents.

You don't need a degree in quantitative finance to get into an investment bank. The best route is still via a degree from a prestigious university in the US or UK. It does not matter what you study.

The quantitive finance programs you find in Hong Kong cannot be found at most well known universities elsewhere at undergraduate leve. For example, LSE only offers general accounting and finance programs. Same at the ivy league universities.

The programs in Hong Kong are very mathematical and intended for people who really like maths.

HKUST and CUHK are about the same in terms of difficulty to get into. HKU is still easier probably because the program is still new or because the general perception is that HKU's business programs still lag behind the other two. CUHK has a joint degree program of quantitative finance and risk managemnt science. It is even more difficult to get into.

Thanks for your inputs and aligned with what we heard from old boys in my son's school last Saturday.

One old boy graduated from LSE in Accounting and Finance, working in investment bank, he shared with us that he recommended my son not to take specific program, try something more interesting. In his team (he is the team head), only he has relevant degree, others are from various background, like law, engineering, music and history.

Agreed.

He likes LSE over local university and prefer Economics. He was in ICL for summer program and visited Barclays Capital before. Everytime, his choice always surprises us.

Relationships within investment banks and with their clients are essentially direct and personal. For this reason the personality of the candidate is of great importance. Imagination, application and readiness to adapt are important aptitudes. Fluency in foreign languages

Minimum entry requirements - upper second class honours degree or a professional qualification in law or accounting. There is no particular preference for any specific degree subject, although a numerate discipline or subject such as economics, law or business studies can prove to be particularly useful. Career advancement of the graduates will depend on their performance, the potential they show and the results they deliver.

We will take note your information and see how far he can go. Non-JUPAS and LSE need IB score 38+.

We may line up an IB in HK for his summer attachment next year.
