香港歌劇院兒童合唱團除文化中心星期三外，2010年將加開上環文娛中心星期四班別。團員明年將有機會聯同國際著名歌唱家及香港管弦樂團參與大型歌劇 La Boheme 演出。現招收5歲或以上團員。有興趣可到香港歌劇院網站 (http://www.opera.org.hk) 下載報名表格。

My kid joined half a year ago. Had 4 performances already & great fun at the summer camp. Found one of their concert video at youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rnMCZp44j0
Instructors just told us that HK talented Singer/Conductor, Apollo Wong, will join the children chorus as Music Director starting 2010. Hope my kid could have even more performance opportunities then!

Performance costume costs $500 only. Judging from the design & materials, I find it quite reasonable. My daughter loves wearing this princess dress. Anyway, other than course fee & this costume, we haven't paid anything extra so far. And we've occasionally been invited to other Opera Hong Kong events / concerts free of charge or with special discounts. My kid likes this choir so much that we quit hk children's choir (we've no time for 2 choirs).

面試需準備自選歌曲一首。面試時會測試小朋友音準及對歌唱、舞蹈和戲劇的興趣。

My daughter sang a song by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the audition. My kid had the audition before the children chorus rehearsal and was invited to have a trial lesson for half an hr. I think she enjoyed the lesson & particapted actively in class so she was accepted.

I originally wanted my daughter to remain at HK Children's Choir cos it's been established for a long time and it's not easy to get in. But my daughter prefers Opera HK cos she enjoys singing there more.
Difference between the 2 choirs:
- Opera HK more performance opportunities
- class size much smaller at Opera HK (2-3 instructors looking after around 15 kids)
- kids can audition for roles as MC & soloistat Opera HK
- apart from singing, kids are also taught movement & drama techniques at Opera HK, HK Childrens Choir mainly focus on choral training
- HK Children's Choir sing "traditional" choral music while Opera HK focus on musicals, disney songs & popular tunes from operas
I think it really depends on character of our children in selecting between the 2. If your kid likes choral singing in a large and prestigious choir, HK childrens choir is a good choice. But if he/she loves to perform on stage more as an individual / soloist, Opera HK is a better option.

What age of children that the society accept?
Does it require any performance experience prior to joining this society?

I think the youngest member in class was 5. I'm not sure if past performance experience is necessary but I don't remember filling this in the application form. I've the impression that they are more concerned whether or not kids love music.

lovemusic: Mr. Mok wasn't there when my daughter had her interview. He has visited the class and took pics with my kid a few times during concerts. He is v. friendly.

Q..joba: my daughter had performed at city hall concert hall, cultural centre concert hall, sai wan ho civic centre and sheung wan civic centre with opera hk in the past few months. But I couldn't find any video clips of the other performances on the web, only pics at facebook.
hk children's choir got lots of performances, but they are for concert & senior choirs & not junior ones. =(

Hi bobomama,
Is the Opera HK very focus on the singing? My kid's voice is not very good for singing, but she is very keen on and have talent on drama (or opera), do you there is any other professional opera/drama organisation like Opera HK that you can recommand for me?
