Can anyone share, how did your kid progress from "reading aloud" assisted, to reading on their own - any tips? at what level do they change?

my children did not show habbit of reading till P1 but since then become a keen reader, I never asked them to read, just let them choose books or buy them books and read for them everynight, not pointing to words at all, no pressure, no hurry.

can anyone suggest which series of books can provide the progressive reading training ? I hope I can read the books every night using 15-30 mins every time/day/nite. Is it useful if I follow such kind of series of books?
I experienced that I picked the books from library but I just picked the books without any interconnection.

Apart from ORT & OST, my son (5years old too!) reads some very easy "chapter books"(for the beginner). You could find from "Scholastic Inc.", eg. the series of "Henry and Mudge", "Toad and Frog"etc.
Let's explore to various books, no need to stick to one series (even it's a good one).

I don't know if these are available from the library or not.
Chapter book is the next step after reading ORT. Kids like these.

Treetops are chapter books, Stages 9-11 are not difficult. Jackdaws is a bit challenging, and may not be suitable if a kid just finish Stage 9 of ORT. I think Robins is more appropriate in your case.
Toad and Frog is OK for kids who finish Stage 9 of ORT.

For Tree tops, kids can finish 1 book in 1 go. It is pretty short (32 pages with not many words in a page). Normally, my son read it quietly first, then I will ask him a few questions to make sure he understands the book. Or, I ask him to re-tell the story in own words. Then, he needs to write comments, usually a few lines. For each stage, I only buy two sets (i.e. 12 books) for him to read.
However, for other chapter books, like Horrid Henry (my son's favourite). He need 2-3 days to finish one book (1/2 hr each day).

She is halfway through Robins already...
Do kids usually finish the whole chapter book in 1 go? I think its a good idea to "assign" 1 chapter to her everyday, and leave her wanting more...

My son is not smart compared to his classmates. He started reading quietly towards the end of P.1 (he is now P.2). Reading aloud is a good exercise. I still require my son to read aloud certain pages. Last year, he read aloud every page and he told me it was too tired to read the whole book, so I suggest him to read it quietly first and then we chose a few pages for reading aloud. I suggest that you may ask your kid to read aloud a few pages first and then ask her to read the rest (either a chapter or a book) quietly and then tell you the story. Re-telling the story in own words at this stage is very good exercise.
For Chinese books, we do the same, reading 1/2 hours every day. We now choose those with pinyin for reading aloud in putonghua and those without pinyin for reading quietly. There are not too many graded Chinese books compared to English books. I almost bought all the good available Chinese books for my son (except for those which are for girls). Those published by sesame (sorry I can't type the Chinese name) are very good. You need time to look around at the bookstore to find suitable books. My son normally finish one book within 2 days.

I have 2 kids, one is 4 and another is just 1.
We start to borrow books from library since my daughter was 3. 1/3 Chinese, 2/3 English. I read books for them before sleep. My helper reads English books during the day time.
For the Chinese books, i read it in Cantonese and PTH. my daughter did not like the PTH version, but i told her that Chinese writing is base on PTH not Cantonese. after reading more books, she understands the different between PTH and Cantonese.
For the English book, I did not force her to read. She loves ORT, usually, i let her pick up books, then i read it for them. if she shows the interest of the book, for example, she likes ORT's "Sleeping beauty", so we did the role play, she is princess and my son/i are prince/solider - we need to do it in English. all of us had fun.

Ha, Ha, 今早跟仔仔讀了一本故事書,好好看! "The Enormous Crocodile" by Roald Dahl
似乎慢慢可跟他一起讀些較多文字而畫面仍好好看的書了!

My daughter is five and she loves Step into Reading by Random House. I read to her every night before she sleeps. I went through the whole set of ORT as I have been reading to her since she was born. She still take out some of the ORT from time to time. I think both sets are good.
I have never tried treetop. Is it good?

最近仔仔好喜歡這個系列的書,因為他跟froggy的活動和性格太似! 這套書(好像有十多本)可讓已掌握一定常見詞彙的k3學生自己完成,有好攪笑的圖畫,用字風格又跟ORT不同,正好讓幼童多作self reading的嘗試。

又發現適合男孩子的英文書, 上來介紹.
"Cam Jansen"系列 by David A. Adler, 每本50幾頁, 共 8 chapters, 完整一個偵探故事. 主角是一樣的, 情節有趣又懸疑, 開始讀後會想讀完為止.
我會先讀一次, 不作講解, 阿仔會有興趣自己揭來再看! 我認為是由story book migrate去chapter book的一個好系列! (比magic tree house的故事更精彩!)

Magic tree house is another set of good books for boy and girl.
Just got an advise from a book saler, the bananas series, there are 4 levels, blue banana, green banana, red banana and yellow banana. I find some in the library. These UK bananas are very funny and my girl loves them.

Thanks. I order books for my son as well as for me. I am a book worm.
I buy Oxford Tree Tops because I want to do some guided reading with my son everyday, on top of his self-reading on other books. Since my son is P.2 now, he needs to improve his writing skill, and I ask him to write book review on those books. He also needs to do the "read aloud" and retell the story several times to different people on each book. I know those books are expensive, and I hope the second hand ones still worth something.

Not because those books are more difficult. Those books are indeed suitable for those kids learning Chinese using Putonghua, pinyin is given for every word.
If your daughter learns Chinese in school using Putonghua, those books are helpful, at least at the beginning.
To begin with, most parents will let their kid read 亮亮的成長中文版. These are available in the library.

Chinese is more difficult to learn, I think we need to put more effort on it. I spoke to some experts and they suggest that we should spend more than double of the time on kids, especially in early age.
For Chinese books, I buy several series which have pinyin on every single word. Since my son learns Chinese using Putonghua, he now can say most of the words, but sometimes he could not understand the content. I will explain to him one by one.
I also borrow Chinese books from the library. There are plenty, from picture books to story books. Start from the easier one first, read with kid everyday, explain to him every difficult word, that's what I am doing now.
There is some progress.
